Hi Everyone,

So I bought a 1970 FJ55 out in AZ a few months ago and it has been sitting in the garage since. I am not starting to "scheme" how I am going to do the rebuild. The pig is in really good shape, amazing, not a lot of rust, the little there is I can cut out and patch in some metal. I am thinking the easiest route would be to pull the frame / body / springs / axles apart and first clean up the frame, patch up the body where needed / undercoat the underneath / clean and paint frame / put the body back on frame / paint the interior and engine compartment white / reinstall rebuilt axles and springs / THEN:

Take the whole rolling truck w/out the engine and drivetrain installed to be painted.

The question is: how much can I expect to pay for a decent paint job? There are a few dents to pull out. I am having an impossible time trying to get anyone to even give me an estimate, even when I tell them I understand it wouldn't be a firm estimate. I have offered to email them pics. I do not have experience in body work but I can't afford 10k to paint the truck, so if it will cost that much I will need to learn. However a few $k would be reasonable, thinking $2500 at most for bodywork and paint.

This decision really changes the shape of how the rebuild will progress so any opinions are appreciated. I know there is really no definite answer but am looking for opinions on others whom have done the process I describe above and how it worked out for them. Also, I think I should mention that I don't need a super nice paintjob. Also, I live in San Diego, CA if that matters. This won't be a wheeler but will be a family hauler, beach, camping vehicle so perfect paint is not necessary. Just decent looking, don't need show quality. I will post some pics so people can get an idea of the conditions.

Thanks!

Noah

You're in car modification heaven, there's got to be a shop out there! I'm thinking a couple of thousand bucks should cover it, maybe $3K?

Like exiled said, there are plenty of shops that do this kind of work. Call and ask places if they do non collision work, ie restoration style work on older cars. They need to in order to even get any sort of interest in the project... I wouldnt expect to pay less than $2000 for what I would wnat for a paint job. A s***ty job will bug you forever, a good one will put a smile on your face every time you see the truck. dont be afraid to send the shop plenty!!!! of pics of where the colors meet ont he body panels, etc.

If you've got it stripped down already, that's half the cost! 2-3000 shouldn't be too out of line if you've done the majority of the prep work. I agree about being willing to pay for quality though.

You live close enough to Mexico, try to find a good shop down there. My dad and I had a few cars painted there, at a fraction of the cost. But that was 20 years ago...

Hey, I got a pair of front fenders I can sell you!

:D

Brett, back from the dead!, didn't think you came on here anymore! :)

Surfpig, hope the fenders worked out for ya!

Sounds like I will go forward with putting it together and sending it out for paint. I may try to do as much of the prep work as possible, but leave the finish sanding/primer to the shop to do. We will see. Thanks. Noah

You might try calling or emailing Steven Raidl in LA who does those incredible restorations on the pig list, did Land Pimp's FJ45, and a couple of really really clean 55's. He does all his own body work mostly for his own expensive restorations but he's got some guy in Tijuana that he occationally uses that also does pretty good work supposedly. He's also got a pretty clean 55 that is green and white that he had this guy do for him that he wants $1500 for, but supposedly it is pretty good work, so it might be worth checking out.

Other than that I am curious about all this as well. From what I've read I am planning to spend about $800, to maybe $1500 at most on actual paint and materials and if I can, shoot it myself or do it with someone I know with a little more experience. There is a friend of a friend who I know pretty well that has his own complete paint booth and everything so if I am lucky we'll be able to do it ourselves. Otherwise I am planning on no more than $2000 around here to have someone do it unless I come across no options and it simply isn't possible for that. And I definetely want a decent paint job this time... Salt Lake City is not quite a California but there are still lots and lots of body shops and all sorts of obscure car culture...

I was going to mention Steve Radl too. I talked to him for awhile once about all this. Good guy, lots of info. His Mexico guy does all the cutting and welding and bodywork.

i think I can take care of most of the rust myself, but the bodywork and paint I would LOVE to outsource. TRUST will be a major issue with someone from across the border so if he comes reccomended then even better, send over any contact info you guys got......

Thanks!

heres my opinion

take off tub.. easy can do it in like a day

send it to be media blasted ( will run you from 200 -400 bucks) soemtimes cheaper if you have a hookup

then take it to a truck painting shop...imron, deltron whatever ( toughest paint you can get)

and it should run you about 2k in the end because you aren't paying for them to sand the paint down because you had it blasted. less sanding

the truck painting shops are very good adn they will shoot paint alot cheaper than most places. They aren't showroom quality but a bang up job.

( semi truck paitning place. theres one in oakland california and they do pretty good work)

good luck

just my 2 cents
