Hi Everyone,
So I bought a 1970 FJ55 out in AZ a few months ago and it has been sitting in the garage since. I am not starting to "scheme" how I am going to do the rebuild. The pig is in really good shape, amazing, not a lot of rust, the little there is I can cut out and patch in some metal. I am thinking the easiest route would be to pull the frame / body / springs / axles apart and first clean up the frame, patch up the body where needed / undercoat the underneath / clean and paint frame / put the body back on frame / paint the interior and engine compartment white / reinstall rebuilt axles and springs / THEN:
Take the whole rolling truck w/out the engine and drivetrain installed to be painted.
The question is: how much can I expect to pay for a decent paint job? There are a few dents to pull out. I am having an impossible time trying to get anyone to even give me an estimate, even when I tell them I understand it wouldn't be a firm estimate. I have offered to email them pics. I do not have experience in body work but I can't afford 10k to paint the truck, so if it will cost that much I will need to learn. However a few $k would be reasonable, thinking $2500 at most for bodywork and paint.
This decision really changes the shape of how the rebuild will progress so any opinions are appreciated. I know there is really no definite answer but am looking for opinions on others whom have done the process I describe above and how it worked out for them. Also, I think I should mention that I don't need a super nice paintjob. Also, I live in San Diego, CA if that matters. This won't be a wheeler but will be a family hauler, beach, camping vehicle so perfect paint is not necessary. Just decent looking, don't need show quality. I will post some pics so people can get an idea of the conditions.
Thanks!
Noah
