I am thinking of jumping off of the BFG all terrain ship and boarding the Cooper Tires ship. I'm on my third set of BFG's. I've been reading good reviews of the Cooper AT-3 and that they perform better than the BFG A/T KO. But, the AT-3 doesn't have triple layer sidewall, which concerns me. I talked to a guy at work, who said he had friends that ran the AT-3's and they either got punctures or sliced up the sidewalls on rocks. So, I am considering either the S/T or the S/TMaxx and wondering how both of them perform compared to the AT-3.

Hi all,

I have a buddy that has run the Cooper STT radial mud tires on two off-road rigs and beat both hard without issues from these tires. They do have a more aggressive tread than most all-terrain tires, so nosier on the highway..

Regards,

Alan

The AT/3 does perform better than the old KO. Find a comparison between the new KO2 and the AT/3

I'm rocking my second set of Coopers on the fj62, and the first set on the fj55 1/2hog. As long as they don't do a sea change in design and cost, I'm on the bandwagon. the first set got near 35K miles and had some life left enough to keep 2 for spares. And they can stop the rig doing 40MPH on a 15 foot diameter dime....I have run BFGs Goodyears and Hankooks as well as a few off brand Big O tires. I like these Coopers. paid 650 installed for a full set(4) at 31/10.50/15...I can hear them, but it makes the stocker 62 sound good;)

I've tried searching online for comparisons between the KO2 and the AT-3, but didn't find anything. I am curious on how those two compare.

Which coopers are you running?

All terrains on the fj62- she just took off an I suffer from CRS syndrome, but they are the good all terrains just below the STs...I'll report back when she gets home. those are a great tire IMO; I love em..I have the S/Ts on the PIG and not enough time on the rocks to justify them. for the hard dirt and wet roads that we drove on/ drive on, the A/Ts are a great tire...

My truck is a DD. most of my off reading right now are sand dunes, dirt roads and desert trails. My rear suspension isn't set up the way I want it, yet. So I'm keeping the off roading pretty mild, right now until I get my new leafs. not planning on much (if any) rock rock crawling. just trails to get to backcountry for camping and fishing and the snow up in the mountains.

oh, I have heard that the sidewalls on the S/TMaxx are a little stiff for airing down. Is this true?

I haven't had to air out yet...

I've got a set of AT/3s on my truck right now. Ride super smooth and are quiet. Had them aired down this past weekend and they performed acceptably despite the mud. I've only had the tires for a couple of weeks and maybe 500 miles.

Same situation here... been running the S/T Maxx in 31x10.5x15 for the last year and love them so far. Have probably 6k miles on them so far with only about 20% being offroad. They have been great in everything I have thrown at them no matter the situation and their road manners are great. I am starting to notice a bit of a MT hum when I am turning now at speed but other than that I do not hear them over my FJ60.

When we need new tires, in the next few months, on the wife's '11 4Runner SR5 I will be throwing either the AT/W or AT3 on that in stock size.

I got the AT3s...love em.

well, I'm half way leaning towards the Maxx. but, you guys are make it hard to decide. lol.

I guess I should ask, what are the pros and cons of both the A/T 3 and the Maxx? a hoping that will help me decide.

I have over 45,000 miles on my A/T 3's and couldn't have been happier. A lot of air downs, forest service roads, deserts, mountains and Southern Utah. "C" rated.

I've been reading through a thread on the St Maxx on expedition portal. People seem to be pretty happy with them and it sounds like they are a great AT, all around. The only thing I've heard negative about them is that they are heavy compared to other ATs. My truck is a DD and I am running 31"s on 15" wheels. I'll be going up to 33"s once I can get new wheels, since I need to get a wider wheel.

This and the only other problem I have read about is that if you air way down that the sidewalls are so stiff from the armortek that the have a hard time flexing.
