Guys,

I'm currently running MTRs on La Cabra. But after Rubithon I need 2 new tires. I went to my local tire shop and they had 2 used 1/2 life Cooper STT tires. Since I will have to replace one of the working MTRs for one of these tires, I wanted to know if anybody had them. And what they though of them.

Regards

Alvaro

Kevin,

Thanks for your reply. The tires they had were Avon's SXT.
I can't complain. I got 3 tires for $90. About half life in them. This will buy me some time until I decide which ones will be my future tires.

Regards

Alvaro

Alvaro,

The Avons were popular for a short while here in Idaho. I'm not sure why they fizzled. I know they had some failures at our local dealer but mostly on overweight rigs used for towing. The Toyo MTs were very hot in Idaho, they couldn't get them fast enough so they started selling people the Cooper STT, they also became very popular and now they are hard to get here too. I have the Toyos and I like them a lot. I haven't found a situation so far where they were terrible. And I've been in some mud, snow, rocks, Moab, lava, etc.... I would expect the Coopers to do just as well as near I can tell they are almost identical to the Toyos in pattern. Two things the tire guys have told me. The Coopers are not as round as the Toyos. And they are not as heavy as the Toyos. As for the roundness we aren't talking unround like a Super Swamper, just they take a few more weights to balance up than the Toyos. I was told this is because Cooper uses a 4 mold die and Toyo uses a 6. I was also told that Toyo was the only major manufactuer using a 5 mold die. And I'm not sure if that carries over to Nitto too. I know Nitto and Toyo are somehow related. The 325/80/16 Cooper will most likely be my next tire. But I'm not going to be tire shopping for a few years so I might change my mind. Good luck! Buying tires is always an experience.

Eric, I'm not finding this size on Coopers website. What do those measure out to? TIA

Alvaro, I have the Cooper Discoverer STT's and have been able to put about 3K on them. In that 3k I have had them in deep snow, packed snow, mud, hard rain (Oregon Coast), and highway driving situations. Thus far, I have not been dissappointed by them and feel that they have performed very well in all conditions. If I had to buy another set right now, I would buy these again without hesitation.

Guys,

Thanks for your input. Originally the guy at Les Schawb had told me that the used tires he had were Cooper SSTs. Next day it turned out they were Avons SXTs. At $30 a pop, I'm not complaining. The best of the 3 has about 5/8 of life left in it. The other two are a bit cupped. The best one is now part of my running set, while the other 2 will be for spares.

These Avon tires are not as sturdy as the MTRs. I'm sure they are fine for most applications. However, I don't think they are the best for rock crawling. I'll run them until it's time to replace all tires on my rig. Maybe six months from now.

It is almost a 37x12.50 almost 13. What kept me from doing it was the little over $300 a tire price tag and the extra lift I'd need to do it. Although I like Mark's approach better, instead of more lift less fender. But I have a pretty clean rig to be doing that to right now. It still doesn't have any dents in it. I've tried I'm just pretty well protected.;)

They look very similar to the Toyo M/T's in their tread. I don't know about the strength (ply) side wall

I believe they both have 3 ply sidewalls.

The 325/80/16s are running about $315 each. I had an opportunity to get them for $298. But that is way beyond what I wanted to spend and plus I wasn't ready to do those kinds of mods. Maybe after today :) My rig is now dented!

I just saw a set of the 325 80 16s and wow, them are some heavy, large tires. Kevin, you seriously wanna run those tires at your elevation?

I live at 1200'.:D I think they will be a good match with the 5.29's that are on the bench. Got a quote back in January of $250ea mounted.

<slight hijack>

Can someone figure this out for me? Look in the Toyo A/T open country chart and notice that there are TWO LT 315 75 16 tires?
copy/paste from the site:

LT315/75R16 121Q D/8
(35x12.50R16) 302010 8.0-8.5-8.0 30.6 13 34.57 12.3 15 3195 50

LT315/75R16 121/Q 300360 8.0-8.5-10.0 67 17 34.6 12.3 15.1 3195 50 603

The biggest difference is the weight: one is 30.6 lbs while the other one is 67 lbs!

What gives?

Just a WAG but one is probably 8 ply and the other is 10 ply. Or something like that.
