FWIW, I just spent a few hours researching this tire. It was a tossup between the STT', the Nitto Terra Grappler AT's, and the Toyo MT's.
I ruled out the Toyos based on cost and weight. I have no doubt that they are a wonderful tire based on everyone's reviews though. I am sticking with stock gears for a bit, so having an excessively heavy tire wouldn't help.
I wanted the STT's bad based on looks and reviews. They are also in the neighborhood of 15lbs per tire lighter than the Toyos. Obviously they are going to be better than the Nitto's in the muddy stuff. I read a ton of reviews on
www.yotatech.com and
www.ttora.com. Everyone seemed to like them at first, and said they did very well off road and in deeper snow. It seemed that after guys got a few more miles on them, they started noticing some flaws. Steering wander, lots of wander during heavy braking, and a tendency to pull to one side. These are all typical of a MT in my opinion.
In the end I played the grown up and went with the Nittos. Unfortunately I had to break down and realize that my rig will spend 90%+ of it's time on the pavement. In my experience an AT does better in packed snow and ice than an MT as well.
The STT's and tha Nittos both seem to wear out fairly quickly, 30 - 40K miles. If you spend most of your time on the pavement, a set of AT's might do you better. But if you hit the mud and want the looks, I think the STT's will do very well for you, and seem to be a very competent tire all around. They do flat out look cooler and I'm sure I will see them on your rig and be jealous.
