I have a 73fj40 with original f engine. I know the coolant system was originally designed with a overflow tube that would discharge coolant on the ground. Is there a reason why I shouldn't create a sealed coolant system with a expansion tank?

Thank you for any input on this topic.

Sealed? As in pressurized? Or are you just talking about having a overflow bottle. There are any number of aftermarket overflow bottles available at any parts store. Heck, for years I have just been using a 2 liter pop bottle with the cap drilled out to accept the hose from the radiator nipple. I was getting ready for a trip and noticed my aftermarket bottle was leaking. In went the 2 liter bottle and it's been there ever since. :hillbilly:

Yes pressurized, why would one not create a sealed system? I have read up on coolant overflow faq but can't find anything on having a sealed system. I'm sure there is a reason but can't find one. Just something I was thinking about as I'm getting ready to install a overflow bottle.

Catch/over flow tank is more than enough.

I believe liquid under pressure boils at a much lower temperature.

That is what the proper radiator cap does for the cooling system...

Thanks guys! I was just curious why I haven't seen any body use a pressurized system. Here is a pic of what I did today.

I had a 76 FJ40 parts Cruiser and I took the overflow bracket and tank off it and put it in my 73 FJ40. If you didn’t know any better you would think that it was factory installed there. Not many people would know any difference.

I'm considering the same thing. Could you please post some pictures?

That one would look more at home next to the aluminum four row and my vintage one would fit better with black painted radiator.

It's an old water bottle and a couple hose clamps... a nicer version of a 2 litre bottle that I threw together out of some stuff lying around. Should hold up well over time.
