Convince me to not get a supercharger… (3 Viewers)

Thanks y’all! Still leaning on getting it but I’m glad some are giving additional perspective I haven’t thought of. I’m not considering getting another car. We have a Prius which balances out the horrible gas mileage of the LC. I do understand it’s not a massive amount of HP, but it’s definitely enough to make me grin ear to ear. As for the brakes, I have a 2013, so it’s before the upgraded brakes of the 2016.

In all honesty, I’m probably gonna get it… then upgrade my audio next year. lol. Yeah, it decreases reliability, but I’m not an “overlander.” I go camping/offroading ~4-5x a year at established camping sites so I’m not worried about being stranded in the middle of nowhere. I have friends with raptors and want to have the same desert-running fun. I already have an appointment to install a king 2.5 suspension tuned by filthy motorsports. After a supercharger and an upgraded audio system, I’ll be in my LC happy place.

Will add if you live in a state/province with emissions, make sure you'll be ok. Don't want to get hassled after dropping that type of change on your truck.
Both Harrop and Magnuson TVS2650 kits are CARB legal which is amazing in its own right. Where they differ is the tuning. Magnuson comes with some level of tuning, Harrop relies on the stock ECU. There’s a couple of good threads in the forum covering tuning.

Is there a general consensus on which one is better?

Oh I noticed you’re in SD? Yes check out Harry and crew down at the Truck shop on Miramar Road. He stocks the Magnuson kit: they’ve installed a few dozen kits. Like I said it’s CARB legal so no smog issues which is awesome.

Do it!

The Magnuson is better is the sense that it comes with upgraded TRD injectors which the Harrop does not and needs to be purchased after the fact. Either way I would absolutely get a custom tune from OTT, Snivilous who is on here, or another trusted tuner. I used Mike at Figs Engineering which is who Slee trusted to tune their Harrop LX.

From reading experiences on the Tundra site Harrop's customer service is far and away better than Magnusson or Whipple. They all just ship it to SCOL (superchargers online) to do diagnostic and repair work. Harrop is the only one I've seen expedite the process and even pay for the shipping etc in the very rare case that something needs attention.

Ah, cool to hear you're a fellow San Diegan.

Brakes - definitely do brakes. More power means more kinetic energy to stop. I've always balanced upgrading motiv power to braking power as it's important to have that safety factor. The first time you overheat the brake system and run out of brakes may be the last time, especially in a heavy pig that is the cruiser. Depending on how and where you drive (hills), this may be even more important. At a minimum, get high temp capable pads as the stock pads are easy to overwhelm in any spirited driving even with stock power. Hawk LTS are high on my list.

Fund your kid's college or sock the money away. Supercharging a Land Cruiser is strictly for the penis. I never understood turning a heavy SUV into a go-fast. Aerodynamics of a brick. Hard on components. Decreases the longevity of the engine. Simply the wrong tool for the job and the novelty of it will taper quickly. Yep....strictly for the penis.

Do you have any suggestions on brakes? I’d prefer to keep my 17” rock warrior wheels if possible. I read about the tundra big brake swap but you need 20” wheels. What about retrofitting 2016 brakes?

Not disagreeing with you, but isn’t it all for the penis? If it wasn’t, we’d all be driving very practical minivans. Also, I’d argue it’s more for the adrenal glands and part of the brain with dopaminergic neurons which releases dopamine. If it were for the penis, we’d be doing it to pick up hot chicks. My wife is hot, my penis is not my motivation. It’s for the thrill and excitement.

Is supercharging a LC the most practical? Nope. Is the desire to go fast uncommon? Not at all. There’s a reason why the Raptor sells so much or why the hellcats and demons can’t be found on the dealers lot. We all have that internal desire to push the edge (maybe not you, but many of us). We (not you) want it all: Practicality, robustness, off-road ability, and yes, speed. Many argue (not you of course) that a LC200 with a supercharger is how a LC should have been released by Toyota to begin with.

Yes, the LC is a brick wall. But it is the most well-built and robust brick wall on the road today. Adding a supercharger just adds another check mark to its already impressive list of “great as” features. If that makes it “for the penis” then strap it on and let’s go for a ride!! (Wait…)

Ps. I contribute regularly to 529 plans for my kids’ education.

Tundra brakes (technically a BBK for us) or 2016 brakes are both relatively easy on our platform. Both will fit under rock warriors.

Awesome! Thanks!

The penis only lives once.

Great points on all sides. As mentioned in the first post, you're taking care of your future self and family. Taking discretionary funds to have some fun sounds well deserved.

How about upgrading the Prius to be that fun and reliable family sedan? There are some wicked EVs that would have way more performance without necessarily sacrificing efficiency, reliability, or qualities that make a good family vehicle.

The 200-series can already keep up with Raptors in the rough stuff based on my experience. As much as I like power, It's not really about having more power. Glad to see you've got suspension in your plans. That, bigger tires for even more traction and compliance are keys to mixing it up in the rough stuff.

SHOTS FIRED!!

I’ll have you know that those of us men who daily minivans refer to them as “manlyvans.”
No shade at minivan owners!!!! They’re extremely practical!! I had to borrow my brother in law’s to get some 4x8 plywood a couple weeks ago!!!

They are good at their designed purpose but I do prefer the cruiser over the manlyvan.

Also, I should avoid this thread altogether because I’ve had forced induction on my mind as well.

I'd go with tvs2650, that Blower is nice

Another San Diegan here…

Go chat with Harry or James at The Truck Shop. They have made some modifications to a Wilwood BBK that will work with 17’s in the 200.
