"Can it be done?" Absolutely.

It shouldnt be too hard.

Just doing a 2-5 swap at the moment, do you not rate the 5L?
Mostly going to the 5 because it has bigger Piston pins, I snapped two pins on the last 2l I turbocharged

You must be talking about the early 2L(T). The 1990+ 2LT-II and 2LTE have the same sized piston pin diameter and big end connecting rod bore as the 5L engine. I've attached the two spec sheets FYI.

The 2LT-II and 2LTE have the advantage of stronger pistons than the 5L. 2LT-II and 2LTE pistons have an oil cooling passage in the piston crown and are semi forged.

I've been running around 18-20psi intercooled for years now on my 2LTE. Power is 125hp at the rear wheels maximum. Fuel turned up as much as possible with methanol/water injection also. Takes it like a champ!

it was a 1997 2L non turbo turned the fuel up 2 turns 30psi and when I took it down the 1/4 I gave it a 50hp shot of NOS
I am building a compound setup at the moment

Sounds like fun! Not sure how big the rods are on the non turbo 2L; maybe smaller; not sure.

What turbo were you getting 30psi out of? Which injection pump? 12mm?

I currently just bought an 1984 Toyota pickup diesel 2L motor and I need to replace the cylinder head on it. I have looked high and low for a replacement OEM Toyota head and cannot source one here in Oregon. Anybody have any leads to one it can just be a bare head ready to install if you have one let me know or where I can find one. Thanks Johnny

Thats a rad little truck. Looks like 11101-54050 is the head you’re looking for? Looks like you can get one here:11101-54050 - Genuine Toyota HEAD SUB-ASSY, CYLINDER

^check with them first, I’ve placed orders for hard to find parts and they have come back later telling me they were incorrectly marked as in stock.

Have you done any research to see if late model 2lte or 3L heads will fit on this engine? Looks like the US 2Ls were overhead cam engines so maybe? Bet @GTSSportCoupe knows. ;) Could save you the trouble of head problem down the road.

Definitely a neat truck!

Is the engine original to the vehicle? Is a 2L or a 2LT? Can you take a picture of the motor and post it?

The pre 1989 and post 1989 (2L and 2L-II) heads are NOT interchangeable. They're both over head cam, but the early one is a rocker head and the later a shim over bucket head. They have lots of fundamental differences (like totally different injectors for example). If your engine is original to the vehicle, it'll be the early one. Use Megazip to find the exact cylinder head part number for your engine. I believe the early 2L/2LT engines had updated 'replacement' cylinder head part numbers as well. Those early 2LT engines were sold in Canada from Toyota, so it's possible there are new heads in north america. If not, you can look at Megazip, Partsouq, Amayama, etc. Also, this guy (Yan) is fantastic at getting hard to find parts. His prices are also very good: Cruiser Addiction

Definitely the old style head. Quick google search turns up this place in Dallas Toyota 2L 2L-T Old Type 2.4 Bare Cylinder Head new free shipping paypal only, no idea if they’re reputable or not. Best to get a good quality head for these engines or find the replacement part number if you can, but I imagine that’s harder on a rocker style engine.

may also be worth considering a swap to a late model 2LTii or even a 22re depending on what your goals are
