greetings everyone,

i have a 1986 hilux single cab 4wd, non IFS live axel front and rear and have installed a 253ci Holden v8 motor, toyota dyna truck gearbox and basicaly otherwise stock...ish. i also have 33"x12.5"xR15" mud terrains and its great fun offroad, but its also a daily driver to get me to school and its harder to navigate a parking lot than a rock face! i want to get a power steering system, but know little about them. ive searched these forums and still have no solid answers, so i will apologise if i have overlooked the answers i seek.

i had a holden power steering pump on hand but was told it may not pump enough (or too much) volume, or so i was told anyway. i believe my best bet would be to source a toyota power steering pump and get a custom bracket made to suit the available mounting points, lign up properly, ect, ect. what i was wanting to know is do i need to find a solid axel front diff, axel assembly that has power steering installed or are they all power steering ready?
also would i be better going to a wreckers and getting a whole working assembly, or sorucing parts? is there any special knowlage envolved or is it a , connect, fill, use kind of job? and finaly do i need to take into concideration the size of my tyres and other factors concidering i do go offroading, i am concerned about straining and breaking something.

thanks in advance for any help, and once again i do apologise if this has been answered before, but i have exhausted many search engines for answers, including this site, google, mechanicaly minded people, ect. im not sure if it makes a diffrance, but im in australia (appart from IQ points :D hah hah)

I'm going to guess that you are from Oz (Holden motor, live axle 86). I would consider cross-over steering. You will need at least three inches lift. Don't know about availablity in Oz. This uses an IFS mini-truck steering box, and I'm guessing you can source the pump. Don't know about right-hand drive stuff so best to source in Oz. USA examples here:

Other than that, installing factory power steering is a no-brainer. You will need a powersteering gear box, pump with bracket, crank pulley for the belt if not already there, idler pulley, hoses. Getting this stuff from a boneyard should be easy. Look at a buddies truck to see what you need.

cheers for the reply pappy,

im going to just leave it non-PAS for the time beying, its just too expensive for a comfort thing
