I am looking at a HDJ81 with the possibility of getting it and selling my 100 series.

I have always wanted a diesel LC, and this one has the same mileage on it as my 100, and appears to be really good shape with the 1HD-T motor.

I currently use my 100 for overlanding type trips that consist of as little pavement as possible, but still ends up being just as much pavement as dirt.

Aside from driving on the wrong side, will I regret getting rid of my 100 for this? I have a wife and 2 kids and it would be used as our adventure mobile.

Thought I would open up to the brain trust about pros and cons.

Thanks in advance!

I purchased my HDJ80 over seven years ago, and that is the longest I have ever kept a car.

My LC 80 thread.

I cannot remember owning a vehicle that can handle everything thrown at it, and still be so dependable. I maintain it thoroughly but it is all planned maintenance and done properly at my convenience.

Buy the right one and you will not be disappointed.......oh and by the way, just so you know, you are sitting on the right side :flipoff2:

Regards

Dave

I own a FZJ80 converted to the 1HD-T. My rig was swapped by Torfab, out in Washington State. I don't have a single regret, after buying my rig. The engine is just awesome and totally dependable. I'd say, having Tor so close to you would make owning an HDJ80 even more tempting! If you can get a clean HDJ, I say go for it.

I have one, and I'm in BC. We love it. Perfect family vehicle. You will not regret it. They are pricey to maintain, but that's nothing different than your 100 series.

Land Cruiser Turbo Diesel Adventure

Here is the CL post. He said he would take 10.5 for it.

Thoughts?
Safari intercooler with an automatic!? Does he have any pictures of that? I thought you couldn't fit the auto transmission cooler with the safari intercooler... If that's legit, the intercooler is a HUGE plus. ... if it's legit.

Also, any good pictures of the engine? Is the transmission an A442f?

Well after a long discussion with my wife, we (she) have decided to stick with the 100 for now. I have a problem with falling in love with vehicles before fully getting the clearance from the boss.

Someday I will fulfill the itch for a diesel LC, just not now.

On that note, there is a nice Hdj81 for sale on Craigslist, check it out.

All HDJ’s will have an A442F if it is indeed automatic.

5 speed iterations will either be an H150F or an H151F.

HDJ81's didn't come with a trans cooler from factory, but they should be added if you live anywhere with hills, or tow at all.

I learned 2 things in this thread already! I didn't know that all hdj auto transmissions were A442F. AND, I didn't know they didn't come with a trans cooler.

So... my rig must be a total odd ball, having the hydraulic A442F and a trans cooler.

Well, your truck was a FZJ80 that had the driveline swapped, so it would have always had the trans cooler, and '90-'92 HDJ81's had a fully mechanical/hydraulic A442F (torque converter lockup in 4th only), and the '93+ got the electronic A442F (which has 3rd and 4th torque converter lockup).

That's what I was figuring. They kept the trans cooler from the gas engine/trans. Then swapped the wholesale auto in and just connected them. Thanks for the info, @IanB !

A couple thoughts:

As the HDJ's approach the 25 year mark you'll see more and more good ones being imported from Japan, the prices for these are already falling and will likely continue to drop.

The Cummins R2.8 produces basically the same HP and torque numbers as the HD-T while being smaller, lighter, and producing much better fuel economy. Swapping one of these into an FZJ could be a good alternative if you're looking for a diesel 80

Why not do a diesel conversion with your 100? I bought a European Spec HDJ 80 back in August, and slowly and methodically outfitting it to an overland vehicle.

I am first dealing with the niggly issues, i.e. proper tires and wheels, fluid transfusions, timing belt replacement (end of holiday season), trying to get the damned dome lights operational, real horns, steering play, etc.... Regardless, I love driving it. Granted when it is stone cold, it is sluggish and doesn't want to wake up, but once that temp gauge hits middle ground, this beast is more than cooperative, even with the PITA stop and go traffic in CLT, rowing through the gears is fun. Also, hearing that that subdued turbodiesel clatter that resembles a turbodiesel Mercedes, is quite a song. Also, that high pitched short lived starter whine when it fires up, demonstrates purpose and conviction.

It may not be a Porsche, but it is way more fun to drive than my DD- a WK Grand Cherokee. I am trying to find a clean 80/100 to replace that mall rig which has no soul.
