With the restoration of my 75 FJ40 I will be upgrading to disk breaks. Someone local to me is seeling a complete front axle from a 88 FJ62 for $250. I just need to confirm that this would work with the axle from my 75.

I 've read all the info in the FAQ a while back and was sure everything would work. I re-read everything last week and I'm a little confused now. I know that I'll be using everything from the knuckle out (this way I get the stronger knuckles). What I am a little confused about are the birfields/inner axles. As the 62 axles are longer do I just reuse the originals from the 75?

I'll go back and read some more and I maybe I'll be able to figure it out. Sorry for the newb question...

yes and yes. You can prolly sell the third member, housing & inner axles to recoup all your $$$ if not more. Buy it.

Hi All:

X2 what "DGangle" wrote. From everything I've heard a FJ62 front axle is a great donor part!

The disc brake outer parts will bolt-onto your 40 Series drum brake axle tube. Substitute the CV ("Birfield") joints from the FJ62 using the stock inner axle shafts and third member (aka differential.) The only thing I think you need to worry about is adapting the tie rod ends (TRE) to the 40/45/55 Series relay rod.

The leftover stuff like the 4.11 ratio fine-spline third member can be sold for $$.

Good luck!

Alan

Thanks for clearing thing up.

As for adapting the TRE it is not much of an issue, seeing that I'll be going Saginaw and have to modify that area no matter what.
