Selling my 62 FJ40, not enough time to stay at it and enjoy it. My other projects have been suffering since I brought this old girl home. I’m in northeast PA about 35 minutes from Rausch Creek (and the former Paragon).
It’s an all original 62 FJ40 with 44K on the clock. It will be state inspected later this week after my local exhaust guy replaces the muffler and tailpipe. It is registered and insured in PA and I have a clear title in my name. I bought this truck from a guy who had it for several years and kept it in a metal storage shed out of the weather. He told me he bought it from the second owner, in whose possession a tree limb had fallen on the roof at the driver side of the windshield area. The roof had (still has) slight damage, and I replaced the windshield frame with a used one the PO had purchased from Specter. Front doors have the suicide vent windows and the fiberglass top has the vent in the rear. The spear on the hood is excellent and of course this truck has the original Toyota embossed headlight surround. The front bumper was glass beaded and sprayed silver.
I had the WS frame semi-professionally painted, the guy did the vent door and glovebox door while he was doing the WS frame. We buffed the paint on the rear of the glovebox door to see what the original paint looked like and had Colours here in PA mix up what I think is a pretty close match. When I bought the truck the front fenders were black, I did nothing more than spray them with a Krylon spray can that looks pretty close. Both fenders need some massaging but I wasn’t ready to get into any body work. All glass is good and the windshield and windshield rubber are new. The WS vent door has a new SOR rubber.
The body’s rear valance under the double barn doors is rusted away and there is a little rust at the bottom of the driver side rear wheelwell, otherwise the truck is very solid. I did replace the fold up upper rear door with one from another truck because the replacement has better rubber seals. The original of course goes with the truck and is very solid. The frame is excellent, no rust through anywhere. The frame VIN number matches that on the firewall and the title.
The truck starts right away with a pump of the gas pedal, runs very well once it warms up. The choke cable is stuck or not properly adjusted, as good as this starts and runs without the choke I haven’t looked into that problem. The PO replaced all the hoses (heater and rad), fan belt, and did a complete tuneup- plugs, points, condenser, air filter, fuel filter, dist cap and rotor, and plug wires. He also changed the oil and filter element, and clutch master and slave cylinders and replaced the steel and flexible lines in that system. He rebuilt the carburetor, too. I filled the tank with gas earlier this week and detect no fuel leaks or gas smell anywhere.
Steering is good, brakes work OK. I replaced the master cylinder and bled the brakes and the pedal is good. I tried to adjust the brakes and found two of the threaded adjusters to be stuck. I didn’t do anything else as the brakes stop the truck OK as is. Four wheel drive system is original and works fine- the vac 2wd/4wd switch works and the mechanical handle for HI/Neutral/LO works as it should. I replaced the Husky front lockout hubs with Warns that I had, they work fine. The Husky’s are included with the truck. Transmission is a three speed with column shift that works properly. Yes the floor is clear and open and I don’t think the transmission cover has ever been removed. The big original toolkit is included and is filled with tools. Can’t tell you if they are all original Toyota tools or if everything is there but the bag is heavy and filled. The original jack is included as are the tools for operating the jack.
This thing is pretty much completely stock, original and unmolested. Under the hood it is all original down to the generator (no alternator), canister oil filter and such. Wiring is unmolested too. The spare appears to possibly be the original Dunlop, I have the other four original wheels with dry rotted tires on them, they of course go with the truck. Rear tire carrier works as it should and swings out of the way and latches properly. The lower barn doors work fine and are very solid. The original driver cooling fan is included, wiring and plug is in place for that I just didn’t mount it. Gauges work as they should, the speedometer/odometer work and so does the gas gauge and temperature gauge. The other functions are idiot lights in a 62 cluster.
Interior is pretty much unmolested too, there are a few holes in the dash where a plow control had been mounted. The grab handle is in place as is the original (small) rear view mirror. Front seats and jumpseats are there, the driver seat has been recovered in black vinyl but the other seats still have the original oxblood covering on them. Yes the driver seat hinges back and the toolbox is in place and not rusted out at all. Jumpseats also fold up nicely. Wipers work, horn works, and all lights work as they should. The PO had given me a new set of tail lights (from Specter), I modified them to two wire lights so the tail lights work properly as brake, turn, and tail lights. Dimmer switch works as it should, dash indicator (red) lights work for the turn signals.
What does it need……..depends on what you want to do with it. You could pretty much buy it and drive it as is, that’s what I was planning to do with it. The metal trim piece that rivets to the underside of the fiberglass top is not in place. It was damaged when the tree fell on the roof and the PO drilled out the rivets and removed it. It needs repair or replaced and I haven’t done anything with it. The driver side window does not go up as it should, a PO rigged it so you can put it either all the way open or almost all the way down. There are some parts included with the truck that would appear to be window lift parts but I haven’t looked at that yet. Passenger window works as it should. The red upholstery is cracked in places and could be redone if you want or left alone. There is no headliner and a few of the bolts that hold the fiberglass top to the sides are broken. You’ll need to re-install the WS vent screens (included, I forgot to put them I when I had the WS frame out). Leaks some engine oil, appears to be from the rear main but I haven’t looked into it.
Price is $3500 with five excellent BFG Muds 33 x 9.50 x 15 on chrome FJ60 wheels. Price is $3100 without those tires and wheels, and either way you’ll get as mentioned earlier the original wheels with old tires (no hubcaps came with the truck). I’ll throw in a really nice pair of 64 hardtop sides and the original fold up rear door (in addition to the one that is on the truck). You can also have the fiberglass top from the 64 if you want it, and you can have the original WS frame- partially repaired but needs cosmetic attention. I can also include a complete working snowplow- it's in great shape, has hydraulic lift/lower (but not angle). I’d really like to see this 40 go to a new home and appreciative owner it’s a great original oldie. Best to email me at home shmukter@pa.metrocast.net and at work GSCHMAUCH@cartech.com. The truck is located in northeast PA. Here’s a link to the “new to me” thread on the FJ25 section of MUD, it has pictures of the truck from when I bought to current. Thanks for looking. Gary S
