So I've been talking alot about it here and there for a few months now, but I finally have my 80 series rear axle under my FJ60. Due to a broken collar bone, I have been unable to do pretty much anything. But thanks to my bros Andre (dieselcruiserhead) and Tovin, the swap is pretty much done. Only thing really left to do on it is the parking brake cable. Then just throw on the sky's widening kit up front, put in the longs, throw on the new wheels and tires, finish wiring up the damn lockers and I'm ready to roll.

For all those who were wondering, the 80 series rear measures 63" WMS-WMS and the 60 series rear measures just under 58" WMS-WMS. So the 80 series is 5" wider than the 60 series. I will be compensating for that by running 80 series wheels that have 4.5" backspacing. I was running 2" backspacing wheels. So with this axle, I went out 2.5" each side, but will be coming back 2.5" each side with the 80 series wheels. Perfect. The front is the sky's kit.

The mount for the park brake cable has me a bit worried though. It seems to be pretty low. With stock 80 series setup, the lower shock mounts and other link mounts provide plenty of protection for it. I may have to figure something out to get it up higher. Won't decide till I get the cable and check it out.

Very cool. Can't wait to see the front. :)

Nice!!! are you wired up??? :)

Looks good Ferg. And it's nice to see some shocks under there. You're sure this is how you're going to keep it?

Hope you're feeling better.

those coils look a lot like leafs..hmmm..haha just kidding bro.

good to see ya still working on your pig...now for some wheeling pics.

Ben, to what extent would the deeper FZJ80 wheels protect the parking brake mechanism, etc.?

Looks great Ferg. Any plans on the front end?

Not sure on that quite yet. I haven't gotten my wheels quite yet. So we'll see...

Front is getting sky's axle widening kit.

What transfer case are you running? something centered?

Stock t-case. My driveshaft is now sort of angled in a bit. Not bad at all. I've had it up to highway speeds with no problems.

Ferg, could you take a pic of locker? I want to see if there's enough room for the lower shock mount between the locker and the spring pack.

Looking good BTW!

Also, could you use the 60 series full floater hubs to bring your width in? I'm thinking of going to IFS hubs in the front and 80 series hubs in the rear. Should give me 3" more width front and rear.

I'll get a pic of it as soon as i can. It may be possible, but I can't think for sure right now how much space there is there.

As for if you could use 60 series hubs on it, well, the 60 series hubs could swap right over and bolt on, but it just wouldn't work with the brakes. You need the wms right where it is on the 80 series rear to use the stock brakes. It sounds like you are wanting to use 80 series hubs on the rear of your 60 series FF, right? That is exactly what a ton of Aussies have done on some 60 and 70 series FF rears to gain some width and convert to disk brakes. I was actually going to do that myself and then use the same sky's kit on the rear and convert to disc but just couldn't find what I wanted to use for a park brake. Seems to me the best option would be a t-case mount brake if you did the IFS front/80 rear swap. My main reasoning for just going to 80 series rear instead of doing the 80 series rear hub conversion like that was that I could do the complete swap with just selling my 60 series rear and not spending any extra money. Of course, I have ended up spending a little bit more, but not much. HTH.

Not at all. He has cut away all the "armor" that shields the levers.

Front of axle, e-locker side. There's more room than on the 60 rear, but only a couple inches. The shock would need to be near verticle to work there I think, but I didn't have time to really sit and brainstorm on it...

Didn't think about the brake issue. Yes, I was talking about my rear FF. If I go that route, I'll either go with the OEM style drum or rig up a disk setup similar to Allpro or Sky's mini truck parking brake. Hopefully by the time I do RDB, someone with come out with a cruiser disk parking brake.

Driveshaft angle:

Doesn't look to bad. The 80 axle is more centered than the 60s, right? Wonder if one could use a centered rear output t'case with the 80 axle? Like an Atlas or Dana 300???

Looks like plenty of room for the shock mount. Although the cable locker actuator might be wider than the e-locker solenoid.

I've been thinking the same thing... I imagine it being pretty much about the same amount of angle, just in towards the center instead of out towards the passenger side.
