Hi all, I'll be picking up a 1998 w/298K miles on it this week, driving home 80 miles. The ABS light on dash is on. Brakes seem to worked fine on test drive, except no ABS function.

What are some of the possible reasons for this ABS CEL?

ABS pump, abs speed sensor, or ecu.
ABS wheel sensors is what I hope is the issues. But would that disable ABS?

I am not knowledgeable enough on the ABS to help. I would think techstream would give you a clear picture of what is not working. I would think that a sensor could disable the system giving the ecu the information that a wheel is not moving and disabling the pump. I would start with a scan. Relay could be bad too.

First I'll need to set-up a windows XP 32bit notebook and dedicate it to garage I suppose. Then hopefully I can get my MINI-VCI cable working. For now just trying to get more knowledgeable with ABS and easy concerns about safety of driving home.

I would agree if any wheel sensor not working properly system would shut down ABS, but not brakes. So this is good guess.

Pedal & brakes felt normal so booster pump working. But I'll need to test to see pumps runs 30 to 40 sec (key on, booster empty) and stops as designed after pumping pedal more than 40 times (key off) to empty booster, for quick field test before driving.

Didn't think about fuse or relay, I'll give that a quick look before I drive. Be nice if this is all it is.

I need a 98-99 LX FSM. All I've got is 00 LX, 01 & 04 LC FSM. If IIRC 00 is when TRAC & VSC was added so FSM testing procedures my be different.

Thanks TM for heads up.

Found in 00LX FSM starting page DI-308, jump TC and E1 of DCL1, I'll assume same for 98LX. I'll need my FSM with me for sure, to setup and read flashes or lack of.

Techstream (a must have 100 tool) runs on Windows 7/10 also

Well not on ABS.

My son & I were in a hurry, so I didn't even get out my FSM. Just checked oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, power street fluid and air pressure then drove it home on ~50 miles of HWY, the balance county road and side street. Brakes worked fine except no ABS (light on).

Once I got it here I washed the body, pulled the engine cover then put on jack stand. Once in the air I pulled the skid plate & #2 shield. laying on my creeper I rolled under YETI with camera in hand, shooting over 400 pictures. Took a lot of picture of wheel ABS speed sensors & wires, master & booster. Shot everything I could, especially what looked oily or wet. Additionally I pulled PS front wheel, removing grease cap and snap ring (ugly) for quick inspection. Then took off stand and video recorded the steering rack and TRE while turning wheel. Then shot engine compartment and some inside main fuse box. I then, finally, start tapping on relays and inspecting fuses. Then started YETI up, ABS light still on, so tapping did nothing at this point.

I'm just get ready to review picture to see what I my eyes missed. Hope I find a bad fuse or sensor wire disconnect in pictures, but I doubt it.

I really need to get my MINI-VCI up and running. I may run it up to parts store and see if they'll check for store codes, in the mean time.

Just found a possible cause. Crack in DS front wheel ABS speed sensor housing. I've seen broken speed sensor housing before that didn't cause ABS light, but it's a start.

Edit: I've got to say pictures really help me find issues. Took a second look at picture, and notice shock lower bolt. Additionally while in shop on stands, I got better look at inside rim of tires, some are showing steel belt. This rig was really questionable for me to be drive 70MPH down the HWY, my bad.

I asked PO if he felt or knew of any reason I shouldn't drive on HWY, "no, none I know of". Buyer beware as they say. The name PO gave it YETI, might have been for hidden danger. Be interesting once I clean undercarriage and engine bay. Second round of pictures show be interesting. Wonder what else I'll find.

Until this 98 I've only worked on 00-02 models. So had to check SLEE OFF Road in FAQ, ATAC was added in 00.
Here a dash pic first second of key on. Side note: I edited above post #14 take a second look.

Sorry My bad I saw 2001 in your sig and assumed:doh:

I've had to replace two ABS sensors on my '03 recently. The ABS light was illuminated, and my code reader on ABS mode showed a failure of the front right, and then rear right sensors.

I ordered sensors for ~$30 from an aftermarket supplier, and as soon as I installed them the lights went away.

No need to be sorry, I aprecate the suggestion. THX

I'll run it up the parts store soon and get code read. Then swap out sensor with one of my other rigs. Will be nice if this works.

wow, $30 is great price would you post a link? THX
