Hey team, its been a bit, had a few more weeks to work on Colonel Mustard here, and made some big progress. Last we left off the body was on the frame, now we are moving on to suspension with 80 series axles and LS engine placement. Most of this has been covered elsewhere. A while back Eaton e lockers were acquired, front and rear diffs were rebuilt with new bearings, and elockers installed, surprised for how many miles were on these axles, how nice the bearings were, and the backlash was still in check. For now I left the stock gearing, will decide later if I need to re gear. This will mostly be a highway mile machine.
After the diffs were set up, the axles were rebuilt and painted, similar to 80 back in the day. On the rear axle, since it will stay leaf springs to make room for a bigger gas tank, most of the mounting tabs were removed and grinded smooth from new spring perch welding later. Axles were fully assembled then bolted in, all bearings and seals were either Timkin or Koyo, lots of grinding, sanding a prep was needed, used Rulseloum primer and implement paint. The Trail Tailor 80 front suspension setup worked perfectly, and everything bolted right up with zero drama
60 front coil conversion.
Axles are in, now time for the motor, transmission and T case. The motor was built several years ago, it's a LQ4 with a bunch of fanciness that should be fun in the long run (port and polished 799 heads, stage 2 cam, all forged internals).. NV4500 transmission and the stock transfer case. Need to be careful with the pre 1985 stuff as it's not as common when ordering rebuild kits. The NV4500 was purchased through Advance Adapters, as well as most of the conversion stuff. The T case was also rebuilt. Everything was bolted together before installing into the truck.
The first major issue was the clutch slave cylinder interfered with the headers, i found a write up from Doug and Well sorted,
NV4500 bracket, and copied his setup. His LS swap write up is much better than mine, check it out.
really good LS swap write up. The next problem was engine placement, also from Doug there is a mount setup the keeps the stock LS engine mounts. Turns out there are also from Well Sorted,
Best engine mount setup. After I ordered, I also got a nice email explaining how to use them. These key off existing bolt locations and really put the motor where it should be, no thinking or figuring out where things should go. Well well worth it tht AA adapters I have will never get used, well not on this project. Next was the rear transmission bracket, it's not the best, but will work for now.
And there it is, suspension and engine in, next up in the next month is steering gear, brakes, twin stick, and setting up the pinion and spring perches on the rear axle. Then its back to the house, looking to sell next spring, so there may not be much progress for a while, we will see. If there are any questions on what I did let me know.
