You boys need the GuiaRoji mapbook of Mexico for the Mexican portion of your route. By far the best maps of Mexico that I have seen to date. I have the 2002 version of that book.

Cruiser_Guy - any idea where we can pick up that book or all books with routes for this trip?

NICE WORK tpatty, got your email also I will be responding to your email tommorow, when I am at work. I will also look into these resources and try to start planning a route and maybe start doing an itenerary, and also will be posting trip details to aid with budgeting.

I would also like for the people that have decided on planning this trip with me (TPATTY, RANMA, ME, DOUGHBOY) to say a little about themselves, and to most importantly explain why they wish to embark on a trip like this, by doing this trip what do they wish to accomplish and/or learn??

A little about tpattyii...

I live in the Dallas and am a pilot for a local freight company. Ive lived here most of my life but leave as often as I can. I am 26 years of age and could likely be the most laid back person on the face of the earth. I go with the flow and aim to have a good time anywhere I go. The wife and I escape out to New Mexico from time to time and down to Austin aswell. Lately we haven't done too much traveling because I am always on the road. We are looking forward to this trip because it is something different...it isnt done everyday. We feel that road trips are time well spent together. It gives me a good reason to buy another cruiser too. Im looking forward to making this trip, and looking forward to meeting some good people to share these memories with. As far as what I want to accomplish/learn? I want to more about our friends to the south. I go to Mexico about every other week, but I dont really get to spend any quality time there. Ive not been to Central and South America and would like to see the sights there...especially Angel Falls. Take care guys

After Tpattyll, my turn now =) Well, lets see. I am originally form Malaysia, been in US for almost 10 yrs now. I work as a recruiter for a company in MS recruting college students for a summer intern program. Love to travel and enjoy all kinda adventure. Started to wheel about 2 yrs ago when I can finally afford a 4Runner, been to CO a few times and wheel at some nice trails and Utah , moab as well. me and my girlfriend backpacking in Vietnam few months ago and we are planning to do the same thing in China in the end of August. I have endless energy when it comes to travel and adventure. one of my dream is to drive around the world with a SUV. we can definatelly enrich our life and experience with a trip like this, I think we will probably appreciate more of what we have and be more giving after seeing other's life that is not as blessed as ours. Will try to look up my prepared list from last year, was planning for a similar trip. Looking forward to meet up with you all, should be meeting up with tpattyll this week=)

interesting web log :www.sandcruiser.com
I emailed Jocelyn last year about their trip:
Hi Hsian,

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. It's great that you'll have two cruisers. As far as your questions, you'll have to buy insurance for Mexico and Belize as you enter the country and you'll get a little sticker to put in your car for driving around. I don't remember insurance for Guatemala. I think you just take your chances. Your license plate is fine.

I recommend putting together a folder or binder full of copies of all of your pertinent documents: driver's license, passport, birth cerificate, car title, etc. This little book seemed to save us lots of times at road stops. They cops would look at it, seem overwhelmed by our organization and wave us on. Also, a complete list of absolutely everything you have in the car is handy as well. put copies of this in your binder too.

Other advice:
1. Don't drive at night.
2. Don't drive at night.
3. Don't drive at night.
4. You don't need half of what you're taking! Pare down as much as you can. You'll be so much happier.
5. Mexico used to have several road blocks -- Fox was trying to lesson these when we travelled, but just know you'll probably get stopped a few times by young kids in uniform with huge guns. They are usually hot and bored. If you've got an extra cold Coke or water, they will really appreicate it and will probably look a lot less intently at your car and what you're carrying.
6. You don't need to bribe anybody. That is, if you obey the law. We paid only one bribe -- for $1 -- because steve was going the wrong way on a one-way street. The sign had been knocked down by a drunk driver the night before! Steve was going to buy the cop a Coke, but the cop asked for the dollar instead.
7. Don't leave anything in your car you don't want stolen. Even for a second.
8. Most people in most places are really nice and helpful as long as you are nice to them.

Safe travels!

Jocelyn

Hi Jocelyn,

I am amazed and inspired by your 4x4 trip to South America. Me and my brother in law plan to drive to Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala this fall. We will be driving 2 Land Cruisers as well :) I am just wondering what kind of suggestion or advise that you and Steve can give us. We never travel this way, this will be our first time doing this. Do we need any special permit or license plate for these 3 countries with American registered vehicle? What kind of insurance can we get for our truck? Appreciate your reply and help. Thanks again!! :)

Sincerely,

Hsian

During the winter months there is a ferry that runs between Tampa and Progresso on the Yucatan. This would save you a few days of drive time.
Do a search for Yucatan Express.

Last time I shipped a vehicle to Costa Rica from Tampa, it was only $450. That is if you want to cut off even more driving time.

Are you driving back too? If so I would follow you from Costa Rica back to Florida.

This is a pretty amazing idea for a trip... I don't think it would be practical for me to go myself, but it is still an awesome project that I'm going to keep up with.

AWESOME INFO GUYS - With the internet its alot easier to plan for all these things and to communicate with other people that have done what ww want to do and they can give us advise, just like RANMA did.

A little about myself -
I am originally from Colombia. I was born there and I was pretty much raised here in the states. For the little time that I lived in Colombia (4 years) I was around my dads huge Cattle Ranches and I was always outdoors and tagging along on my dads Nissan Patrol's, or his Landcruisers. I enjoyed driving them. After owning a 92 FJ80 since new, and seeing all these awesome cruisers in colombia. I started searching for other enthusiasts, and I happened to find this site. Since here I guess you can say the BUG bit me, the 80 is completely stock and never seen mud. I had always liked exploring, wondering through the woods or whatever and finding new stuff. So my main focus for my rig is the expedition aspect of it. It was only until I was reading through a thread in the 70 series forum where they were asking if they could import those landcruisers here. I love that style landcruiser because I owned one in colombia, and had always wanted to bring one here. Well to make a long story short, there was a link about the Darien Gap, and thats where I found my inspiration, a guy in the 70's had traveled through it in his jeep and went all the way to Argentina. Thats when I decided to post here and see if there were other adventurous open minded people who would want to embark on this adventure with me.

I am 23 years old, I speak fluent spanish. I am very easy going and east get along with. I dont fall apart when things dont go according to plan, I actually like when things change or something unexpected happens. I thrive on adventure. With this trip I want to accomplish alot of things. I want to be able to show people my beautiful country, I want to be able go home (colombia) in my own built rig, just getting it there is an accomplishment. I have never been to any other countries in South America, and I would like to explore them and visit them.

I am planning to take my dad with me, this is something he really wants to do also. He enjoys just getting on the road and heading to a new place, But we want to get off the beaten path and visit little towns and meet new people.

I feel that this would be an awesome experience because will establish a bond and when we are out in other countries, we will be a team and depend on one another to get through anything. So hopefully we can all establish some good friendships.

ya for sure you can .. you have to options to cross the Panamá canal .. the firsrt one and the old Americas Bridge .. and the new oe ( that you see in the pic ) Centenario Brigde ..

Si keep in mind not only the Darien Gap issue as the jungle and river ( deep river ) crossing .. also the FARC are ( Fuerzas armadas de colombia ) in all area .. Not only the Colombian side .. there come ilegal to Panamá and back ..

I have just downloaded and awesome program, it doesnt lists roads but it does list some awesome detail MAP info.
I would suggest you download GOOGLE EARTH
http://earth.google.com/downloads.html

We can use this for now to plan a route, using city to city type thing for stops and destinations.

Anybody know of a site that would list the maps electronically, something like mapquest. ?? Along with driving directions, it would have to be computer based, so I can install it on our laptops and use that for naviagtion. Something that would have central america and south america road maps.

TAPAGE - If we dont want to cross through the Darien Gap, And ship our rigs from COLON to Cartagena can you help us find a shipper or cargo company that would do that?? And would be lite on the pocket??
