Hey guys.. Sorry I havent been on here in a while, I just got back from my third trip this year to Colombia. My Fiance is in Colombia.. !! So much stuff is happening around here that I dont know where to start...

Lets see!! Work is going to be taking me to Panama permanently by the end of the year. I dont want to send my rigs via boat because I feel it would be cheating. So I want to drive both of my 80's to Panama. I am thinking by the end of the year or so. But I am still up for the SA Expedition for next year. I just will have to start mine from
Panama.

I got some shipping quotes from panama to Cartagena and its around 700-900 per 40 foot container.

Santi, thats awesome that you also share that passion. I just got back from Colombia, and all I feel is envy wishing my rig was down there with me, I hate seeing so many gorgeous Land cruisers and Prados and not being able to drive one or have mine to take 4 wheeling. I wish you luck on finding a good cruiser. If there is space on one my righs, your more than welcome, to come along.

I am also in IT, but I am more of an extreme sports guy than Geek.

Are you making the arrangements ahead of time or will you ship when you get down there?

Although we won't be leaving at the same time we will be following you expedition with great interest!

Quixote, When do you leave on your trip??? I am most likely going to make the arrangements ahead of time, or atleast know what company I will be using to ship to colombia from panama.

We are planning to leave January 2008. The tentative schedule is as follows:

Jan-May Central America
Mid-May Ship to South America from Panama (Venezuela?)
May-December South America
Early December - Arrival in Tierra del Fuego
End of December - Ship car back to US

This is only a rough plan - weather, roads, and political conditions will have to be taken into account.

We just finished a 4x4 seminar by Harald Pietschmann and learned a lot about the capabilities of our vehicle! His advice, based on leading many 4x4 expeditions around the world, was to keep it simple. He even insisted that an ARB bumper was not necessary! :crybaby:

I was really looking forward to putting one on!

That seems like an awesome expedition. I wish lots of luck, it would be an awesome experience fro anyone who decides to embark on an expedition like this. It will also be good with a group of 3-4 rigs. Let us know how the preparations are coming along, and what route you have planned on taking. What maps or route planning software or materials are you using? Also what GPS are you going to be using? Are you going to be camping most the way or are you going to be staying in hotels? Let us know what you have in mind.

I think it would be awesome with more cruisers! The planning and prep are consuming most of our days. Both my wife and I know nothing about cars so we are currently learning out our "project" car, a 1997 Mazda Miata. We have changed the radiator, valve cover gasket, water pump, idler & tensioner bearings, CAS O-ring, thermostat, spark plugs & wires, timing belt, etc. on the project vehicle.

I just ordered a Gobi Ranger rack for the FJC and we plan on doing an OME lift on it. Other items will be two Optima Redtops, 110v inverter, and BFG/Goodyear MTRs. We plan on doing some local trails to test the equipment, tires, and tent to iron out bugs. We will also do some more 4x4 training with Harald.

We are also planning to do a Emergency First Response course through the Red Cross or through the Wilderness Clinic to deal with medical emergencies. Spanish classes start this August.

As you can see we have a very full schedule for the next year!!

For the GPS I was just going to take my old old Garmin III+ and connect it to my Dell running the Garmin mapping software. We plan on asking locally as to what road conditions are.

The Dell will also run software from AutoEnginuity which monitors all the sensors on the FJC and reports their status. I forgot what year your FJ80 is but if it is equipped with OBD-II you should consider this. I plan on taking traces from the car now so I get a good bead on what healthy graphs look like and monitor if it starts deviating. Have you guessed I am a computer geek ;)

The current plan is to stay in hotels wherever possible but we will carry a tent we can put on top in case we want to stay out in the woods.

I just returned from a road trip traveling on paved roads to San Juan del Sur in Nicaragua (Guatemala to San Juan del Sur via El Salvador and Honduras, and back... it takes 13 hours one way, including borders), and loved it. Also visited Granada and Ometepe island on Lake Cocibolga. Would love to repeat it camping out, and on back roads. I felt quite safe. The borders are now open, in the sense that you only do the paperwork (very little) on one side.

How is it now for non-CA-4 registered vehicles? We used to need to get temporary import papers for each country (Q40 for Guatemala, free for ElSalvador[US$10 for the personal visa though] and about US$50 for Honduras). Is that changed now?
