Coilover setup for UZJ100

Can you elaborate on this a little more? Is there a different way of lifting a 100 without lowering the diff? I've never really been into IFS before buying my 100 and have always had SFA vehicles. I'm just trying to picture a different method of achieving lift and travel on an IFS rig. Yeah, I know you can swap to a SFA but keeping the IFS, is there some other method?

It would probably be cheaper to do a SAS w/ a LC78 front axle and lift it like an 80.

What would be useful are 2" lift shock brackets for AHC-equipped vehicles. That would eliminate having to geek around w/ the AHC sensors and allow one to replace the stock LX springs w/ 2" lift springs while retaining full AHC functionality.

Now we are talkin! I don't think I'm going to tackle the AHC thing unless hoser plans on vacationing in South Carolina sometime down the road.

Tweaking with the AHC sensors is extremely easy and simple mod. If you don't like the results, you can go back with no side effects. It at least buys us some time til something better comes out.

An IFS diff drop really isn't any better than a body lift. It ONLY gets you more room for larger tires. A mild diff drop to improve drivetrain angles, coupled with better torsion bars or springs like what Slee sells is the effective limit of a diff drop.

Longer arms with custom joints allowing more misalignment is the only way to gain significant amounts of travel with IFS. Obviously, coilovers in an IFS setup will be better than torsion bars, because you can install longer springs to gain lift but not lose flex. Torsion bars gain lift by raising the spring rate, or tightening the adjustment cams, reducing droop. No matter what springs or torsion bars you install, droop is limited by the arms. More lift=less droop.

Modifying IFS gets expensive that it becomes more sensible to install a solid front axle.

Have all the specs for a coil over for a 100, but not with such a lift like those pics listed above.

This has already been suggested... if you read the attached post (click here) Total Chaos Fab is willing to expand their product line. The shop is about 15 miles from me.... and it appears by their response to Hoser, they'll do some R&D and fab work if they have willing participants.

I myself wouldn't alter my LC with this stuff, and I certainly wouldn't want to be the guinea pig for the R&D... chasing driveline problems, etc.

I think a nice modest 2-3" lift the guys are doing in here with OME/Slee stuff is sufficient for a luxury SUV.... there are some very nice rigs being built by the folks in here. I esspecially like what ShottsUZJ100 and spressomon has done to their SUVs.

Maybe if I won the Mega Lotto and had a disposable income I would change my tune... but for the most part my LC needs to get me to and from the office everyday... and I also need to be able to get my 75 year old mother into it for those special occasions.

I guess Total Chaos would need some firm commitments to proceed...

Well, don't know if I'm missing anything, but I sure respect your persistence to convert me. I agree with what Brain said in this post ... Here. And to do it right, your looking at serious design, engineering, fabrication and suspension geometry expertise; including expertise altering steering linkage, extending half-shafts, SS brake lines, cutting fenders, etc.

You need to have a lot of customers lined up for a reasonable ROI...

There are shops all around me engineering and installing this stuff .. but typically NOT on luxury SUVs. I see hundreds of altered IFS trucks because I live in Southern California. The most common is Toyota and the new F-150.

But there's a point when it becomes a potential liability issue, especially if it's used for daily use. I personally wouldn't do radical long-travel suspension alterations, even with 3" lift.

Oh boy...here comes some negative comments...........

Unless it would be for an "experiment" or for some very unique application (not trail running), I can't see a big benefit by rebulding the front of a UZJ100.

The UZJ can already run just about any trail you want and that's with current designs (2.5-3" lift). It's already a super capable trail vehicle. Adding a live axle will add some front-end durability (little IMO) and a couple inches more travel, though the UZJ will still suffer from it's SIZE on a trail like the Rubi. Ramp a 3-inch OME FZJ and my 3-inch UZJ with the 80 L-shocks and the numbers are CLOSE. Remember the 100 did 560+ stock and the 80 was in the low 600's.

Think of this.....my '93 FZJ has just a smigin below 4" lift. My new LX is at 5". You know what that extra inch is gonna do for me out there? VERY little as the 80 is a monster with 4".

Same is true with the UZJ. With 2.5-3" it can pick it's path. Where will it struggle? MAINLY where it doesn't fit. There's nothing you can do about that. If we rebuild the UZJ for a 4-inch lift I see more risks and less rewards...and the on-road ride/reliability suffering.

For those who haven't seen....here's what possible on a 100. The top two show the rear travel with the L-shocks. The bottom one shows the front's 7.5-inch travel. A bit more would be better....but at what expense?

2- The right rate for the spring in the front and rear for the Coilover setup .. say Maybe around 700 Lb/inch ..

3- Dose 3 inch O.D Coilover fits in the front of the suspension

4- when that Happen .. dose that deletion the torison bar ..

Demello makes some of the best IFS stuff out there for yota's. It's not primarily designed for rock crawling but that doesn't mean it's crap. Those guys will smoke any solid axle out there with their IFS, only it'll be at Baja at about 60+ mph. Different crowd than most on here but I guarantee you they know what their doing.

Curious EL_3GRAB.....why do you want a front coilever suspension on the 100?

1- i want adjustable hight Front and rear .. option compression & rebound

2- i would like a long travel suspesion for the Sand and dunes .. all that jump at 40 mph

3- you can tune the suspension for street performance .. there's alot high output LC 100 in the gulf ..

4- its better than T-bars with Shocks

EL_3grab.... well now I'm with you and have a better understanding of your goals. In the USA we have other special toys for jumping over sand dunes, and they're typically more radical.... and probably a little more safe and fun than jumping in a 6,000lbs LC.

Take a look ... Buckshot Racing. I can see this shop from my office and I hear them taking test runs in these fine gems all the time.

This one has King Shocks and also a 500 hp LS6 Vette motor.... pretty radical huh?? ... you may want to ditch the LC and buy one of these, you'd be the talk of the town.

I bet they'd fabricate a custom one to look like a LC for you.
