I am having trouble with the new clutch plate I bought. It fits over the Toyota clutch alignment tool just fine but when I try to put it over the transmission splines it won't go on. The transmission splines look in good condition.

The old clutch plate fits on fine. It appears a little deeper on some of the channels but only by a few thousandths.

I don't want to file the transmission splines but thought it might be OK to file the clutch splines a little but I might do an uneven job of it.

I would return it but I bought it over 3 months ago and didn't check to this detail until now.

Any suggestions? Should I try to file it or go to a machine shop to do it. Or just bite the bullet and buy a new clutch plate?

I'd call the place you bought it from and give them a chance to make it right.

They should make it right. Most have some form of warranty... usually a year.

Anyone know the specs on the input transmission splines? Mine are from peak to peak

27.66, 27.74, 27.68, 27.71, 27.70 in mm.

Please post up a picture or two of your clutch disc and hub/spline area...

Also, what brand is the clutch disc/kit and where did you get it from?

I don't think it is GM. The old clutch has 2FA stamped on it. And the splines seem to be the standard 10 spline input shaft.

Wondering if it is possible that the input splines wear and get compressed higher over time due to friction?

What do you think Pinhead?

There are different types of splines. Not to make it overly complicated, but on some the sides of the spline are parallel while on others the sides of the groove between the splines are parallel. GM used one type while Toyota used another. My experience is that a Toy disk will fit on a GM tranny but maybe not visa versa.

Having trouble with pictures today. The company I got the kit from is gripforce-clutches off eBay. But the pressure plate has Aisin stamped on it. I can't find any markers on the clutch but it looks like some other Aisin clutches I have seen online.

The bearings look a little suspect. The pilot bearing is from a China. Not sure where the throwout bearing is from?

Here are some pictures of the old and new clutch disks and splines.

The input spline heights are

27.66 mm 1.089 in
27.74 mm 1.092 in
27.69 mm 1.090 in
27.71 mm 1.091 in
27.70 mm 1.090 in

New Clutch spline width

27.53 mm 1.084 in
27.37 mm 1.077 in
27.77 mm 1.093 in
27.64 mm 1.089 in
27.57 mm 1.085 in

In almost all cases the clutch widths do are not deep enough for the input shaft.

My old clutch widths

28.57 mm 1.125 in
28.54 mm 1.124 in
28.56 mm 1.124 in
28.41 mm 1.119 in
28.74 mm 1.131 in

Does anyone know the actual input shaft spline specs?

Just looking at the pics, it appears the lands on the splines of the new disk are wider than the old disk.

What are the part numbers of the kit or the disk?

I would contact the seller. They might work with you on a trade out. Worst they can say is 'no'.

Those eBay prices aren’t that great. You could get a LUK clutch kit for less money.

For the 1975-1987 trucks...using the diaphragm-design, multi-finger pressure plate.

I am not aware of a LUK kit for the 1974 and earlier clutch (three-finger) design pressure plate.

They finally said they would exchange the disk for me but if they send me back one just like this I will be in the same place. The Toyota Alignment tool fits in both so this has to be close.

I got some small filing tools at harbor and I am going to try to file these out a little on the new disk. It is very hard metal though so it's slow going.

Going to try to file them all out to 28mm.

I ended up filing it out by hand. It took several hours but now I have a custom fitting clutch plate.

The pressure plate was a b to get back on too. The key was to tighten down each of the three bolt pairs evenly and slowly. I had to rotate the crank several rotations until I brought all the sides down.

Soon the engine will go back to its home.
