been trying to load the gwagen and wrangler coming down that first steep hill. Youtube is giving me issues. I'll keep trying.
That's why I use Vimeo. Plus Vimeo keeps things at 720. If I had the paid membership all of these videos would be in 1080. Also no copyright issues if you add music to a video.
Any chance you're related to Colonel (ret) Stephen LaRocca? I'll get the video posted for you once I'm near the other laptop, this one is ancient.
Not directly related, but there's a good chance that we are relatives. The La Roccas are from Sicily and slowly split and migrated between 1900 and WWII. I believe the family split 3 ways. My grandfather was very young when his father moved the family to Argentina, then the other part of the family seems to have come to the U.S.
I'm pretty freaking sure I'm related to "John Sebastian Larocca" though... He was one of the top mob bosses in Pittsburgh up into the 80s

Awesome! Thanks! Pictures and videos never do the hills justice, but seeing both trucks slide from doing nothing but hitting the brakes is a good indicator of just how ridiculous that hill was! I probably won't be doing that again unless I go with someone that has a truck similar to Shawn's again in case something happens, or until I get bigger tires. That was nuts.
That was nuts, i don't think I would have tried it even if my rig had good brakes.
never use your brakes like that on a down hill. that's how you roll. you need to put your rig in 4low and let the motor do the braking for you.
Thanks for the tip. In my case the brakes can't stop the truck when in 4low, the rig just keeps pushing thru, so I avoid really steep descents.

when in doubt throttle out! even going down hill. better bounce a few fillings lose then to tumble down the side of a hill end over end, or side, top, side, wheels, side,top, etc....
I see you have a 4bt in that 62, what trans and tcase do you run? is 4 low that steep or does the diesel just have that much torque?
a 3.21 final drive makes downhills like that one really difficult. turns out that bit of slope was on the "loose rock" trail which is marked as a 5 on the map.
Running the nv4500 and stock transfer case. The torque is unbelievable, haven't used 1st gear yet.
since you run a standard put her in lo and first gear and that should be plenty low enough for "motor" braking.
have you looked into a master cylinder upgrade? I know on some of these Toyota's you can do a GM 1-ton master cylinder upgrade. it might help w/ holding the brakes a little better.
how did the military tires do for you out there? do they still have the run flat magnesium inserts still or the pvc inserts?

I haven't looked into a master cylinder upgrade. I am thinking of converting the rears to disc brakes. The military tires did well, the goodyear MT are not my favorite, but will do for my purposes. They have the pvc inserts in them. I thought about the 1st gear after I had descended the hill, force of habit made me use 2nd.
I'd do a Hydroboost setup instead. You can get all the parts at your local junkyard off of a Chevy Astro van.
