Club meetup spot for anyone looking to join the Caravan to Uwharrie is 10:30 AM Thursday April 10th at Southern States on Rte 29 south West side near Warrenton. We have a pretty decent size group assembled. It’s not a fast moving caravan with trailers and Vintage Forties on the open road, but it will be an impressive sight. North Carolina Relic Run does not sell out registration generally so it’s not too late to go.

Two (learned from experience) convoy suggestions:

Lane change: If the lead vehicle needs to change lanes, tell the tail vehicle (via radio). When there is a gap, the tail vehicle can change lanes and then as the gap moves forward the next to last convoy vehicle can change lanes, and the the next…… finally the lead can change lanes and the convoy stays together. Tail to lead lane change.

Comms (highway not trail): The lead & tail vehicles should have higher power radios with an external antenna. A lead vehicle with a wimpy (low transmit power) Bfang radio with an inefficient rubber ducky antenna, inside a metal box with tinted windows will have a very limited range. If everyone is bumper to bumper and it’s a small convoy, probably ok. If it is a long convoy or there is separation (half the convoy got caught by a red light) lead to tail comms is lost. The group caught at the red light couldn’t hear the lead’s transmission to turn left. First hand experience.

Ok, the TechnoNerdGeek moment is over.
I’ll shut up now. 🤓
