10/10 would still go again

Front is completely gone...fortunately with my upgrade last year to the free spool transfer case and manual lockers up front, I was able to get off of the trail and back home 350+ miles with the front unlocked. Of course this was on basically our last little stretch of the trip with a mentality of "oh, we can do this short little black trail, there's an early exit if we need it"...I got hung up in the creek bed and was trying the forward and reverse rocking to get free. I know that everyone that was on the trail that day heard the loud crunching/grinding sound when it let loose! I was hoping that it was just the locking hub, but no luck!

Gear wise, mine were upgraded by the P.O. to 4:56, but not sure of what brand they are. These were installed at least 10 years ago, so they should have been the higher quality older ones...most (or all?) are now outsourced to China including Yukon, which used to have a good name, but apparently not really anymore.

It will be time for a front locker upgrade since I'll be in there anyway...I have the ARB in the rear, but seriously considering the Eaton up front. And to find a good shop for the rebuild...I may pop over and chat with Paul at World Tour, or check with East Coast Gear Supply too. I've done gears before, but not my favorite project since I can just pull the 3rd and ship it out.

One saving grace, we ALL had to winch out, even with the early exit option...I have my @DC470 Fred Bobble Head mounted to my roof here...after all, he was the one that coerced us down there!

lockers before fall crawl?
Hopefully! If not, the 4Runner will be on pulling duty for the trailer w/RTT and I'll be a shotgunner all weekend....

the Fred bobble head is flying off the shelves, lol! Seems like a no-brainer to drop it off at World Tour since they are just down the road for you.

Yeah, especially since I can pull it apart and take just the 3rd to save on the laborious part of pulling the front axles out...I know that Paul does a ton of Jeep stuff of course, but when we went to the open house, 1000's of shims hanging above the "gear bench" proves it. I'll reach out to him first to see if he's willing and comfortable to do it.

Hey, like Jake said...I do like a good excuse for the front locker option...you know, a "while you are in there" type of thing, just throw an extra $1300.00 at the solution!

C'mon Eric, all the cool kids are doing it!

Finally got around to looking at my winch (the one that imitated a sparkler and then wouldn't pull me up that trail exit). Believe it or not this was the first free weekend I've had since then. Anywho, put an order in for a replacement solenoid hoping that does the trick. It spools both ways here in the driveway but I suspect when it's under load the power draw is too much for the solenoid when it's spooling in. I'll clean up all the wiring contacts to and from the solenoid and motor while I'm at it. Hopefully it will be ready for Fall Crawl if and when called upon and we won't have to use both of Kevin's winches again! (although that was kinda cool)

if the solenoids don't cut the mustard, look into transitioning to an Albright contactor. If we don't see you at the meeting this week, i will see you at Fall crawl! :-)

I contacted Warn and this is what they recommended:

It's pretty similar looking to what I currently have and also the Albright.

They were also able to confirm my winch was made in either 1977 or 1987, so it's pretty old! (which is not hard to believe by looking at it)

Looks like you are due for a little freshening up!

And looking back at my winch out without 4wd, in hindsight I would have used my ring to double the line back to the truck to compound the pulling action...that pull gave mine a workout too!
