Stump grinding method using chainsaws and fire:

Cut your stump as low to the ground as possible.

Using a chainsaw, cut hashmarks in it as deep as you feel you can, but still getting mostly wood (vs dulling your chain in dirt/sand).

Fill up hash marks with diesel (not gas) - just a couple cups per foot at most. Has to sink in - don't top it off, etc. Don't do next step without the diesel being absorbed mostly.

Light a full charcoal chimney and pour out the coals once lit on the stump. Let it burn out.

Collapse hole with a shovel. Fill extra space with topsoil, above.

Works best after letting the stump "cure" for a while.

Thanks @weejub

I have cut the stumps down to ground level.

Some were cut months ago and have dried out. I'll use your method on those and wait for the fresh cuts to dry out.

I broke down and bought a Powerhouse chipper at Northern Tool. It's a chinesium one but runs pretty strong and makes small chips.
