We're looking at some rooftop tent options and how to get the dogs in and out as simply as possible. One option would be for me to stand on the tailgate with the liftgate closed and simply lift the dogs into the tent if we get a rear opening tent. Just trying this out it seems my 2020 LC doesn't let you close the liftgate with the tailgate open. Anyone know how to do this?

Did you only try and close it with the button? Should be able to close it by just pushing it down by hand.

On our 2018 LC 200 we can manually close the window hatch while the liftgate is down. We'll often stand on the liftgate to assist in closing our side entry RTT. Once done, we manually open the window hatch, close the liftgate, and then close the window latch using the electronic assist.

yeah I've had previous cars with power liftgates that freak out and freeze if you manually close the liftgate so i wanted to check in here before doing that. Will pull it down and make sure that works. Thanks!

Just pull down slow at first and should be no problem. Also allows you to have an extension cord coming out of the back and still lock the doors.

glad to hear the LC isn't as finicky as the Telluride we had previously. That power liftgate quit working for 4 hours after we opened it like 10 times within a couple hours with the vehicle off. Had to climb in the back and use the manual release to get it to open. Also flaked out on me a couple other times after that trip and ended up having the Kia dealer replace it. Yes I know the Telluride is no LC hence why i sold it and bought one of my bucket list vehicles!

At least there was a manual release . . . no such finery on the 200. No power no workee.

I haul lumber from the hardware in my 2020 with the tailgate open and the glass closed. No problems other than the warning buzzer won't shut up the whole way home.

I’ve done this before too. My solution has been to manually close the latch. That tricks the system (at least in my ‘14) into thinking the rear gate is closed.

By "manually close the latch" do you mean locking the glass portion after it is down? Same problem here hauling stuff around. So annoying.

Yes just take a screwdriver and snap the latch, it tricks the truck into thinking it's closed and latched. No more beep.

Where is the latch located?
Right in the center, on the under side edge. Open the top and look, it's right there. Looks like a normal door latch. There's a switch inside the upper gate that signals when it's latched.

Just don't forget to unlatch it when you're back home and unloaded (push the button). Otherwise when you shut it, the closed latch will BANG on the catch with an unpleasant sound, then you'll remember.
