Morning, I am no mechanic so help from everyone is very much appreciated. I tightened the front wheel bearings up on my HJ61 and now there is a loud clicking noise. It is odd because it’s only when driving, when I jack her up and spin the wheels there is no click and no play. I guess I have done something wrong when I tighten the bearings up, any ideas 🙏

Any idea the last time the hubs were rebuilt? Or when the bearings last replaced?
I just stripped them down and put new brake discs on, new locking washer and new spring clip but the bearings looked ok, there isn’t any play, I tighten up but not mega tight. What’s weird is doesn’t do it on the jack only when there is load on the wheel

Does this happen with the dial set to FREE and LOCK ?

Unfortunately both, even if I remove the dial it makes no difference in 2 or 4wd. Keep thinking it’s the bearings but started straight after new brake discs. 🤷‍♀️

Pretty sure just the one side. Under medium breaking it goes. Speeds up when driving faster.

Is the caliper firmly bolted on still?

Yes calliper is on tight. All spins with no click until she is off the jack. Had it apart again and checked the bearings and they look fine. Put it all back together again and still clicking. I can only assume it is the bearings so I have ordered some more just to eliminate if nothing else..

So just a little update, I fitted new bearings but when I was doing it I noticed the wheel spacer nuts were loose. Anyway tighten them up and with the new bearings the clicking has gone. Think it must have been the spacer nuts as it didn’t click before I fitted new discs.

wheel spacer nuts were loose.

Nothing ever good comes from wheel spacers.. I run -44 rims to kick them about a bit.. maybe safer than spacers but still a bit tougher on the bearings than the standard offset.. Glad you got it sorted, that could have ended in tears.

Your right could have ended in tears, I had driven her 150miles at 80mph, going to put 3 point rear seatbelts in now for sure. I guess the 16” Berg wheels are aftermarket but what about the spacers? I guess the wheel arches are oem so hard to think what would of filled them without spacers

Yeah those rims just aren't suitable for a 60 in my opinion.. the offset is far too small

-44mm 15" alloys on mine..

She is a pretty girl. Think you are right about spacers and offset, I will only ever be on the road so I like 16” rims. Think at some point I will have order some more suitable rims.
