So I'm in the middle of my engine reseal and have the intake manitold out right now. Lots of nasty carbon deposits on the inside. I would like to clean it out and make it nice and pretty since I've got easy access with it out. I was thinking a circular wire brush on a long flex bit with a drill? Would this be the right thing to use? Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks!

Try this...

I soaked mine in a 50% solution of Simple Green and hot water: my new favorite degreaser !

Left it for a few days then hit it with the pressure washer. Carbon and whatever else was in there in now gone. Looked like the day Mr. T cast it.

Rgds....

What did you use to scrub the insides, if anything?

In my case, nothing ! I'm guessing the Simple Green loosened everything up and the water pressure blasted it away.

Get it hot tanked. Works like a charm every time.

X2 on the machine shop. I had mine bead blasted and pressure washed and came out great.

x2 on Simple Green.

I used to use the normal "Green", but came across the Simple Green "Max" at Kragen. Used this for much of the top end, block, and other parts cleaning with my 80. It was able to cut through varnish, etc. which normal solvents took forever, or left deposits behind. Used a nylon bristle brush with great results, and let it soak if necessary. The best part about the "Max" is that it does not stink to high-heaven...and the original used to give me a nasty head-ache after a while.

With regards to hot-tanking, be CAREFUL. Done right, yes, solvent tanks can work. Done wrong (ie too hot or too long), and you will not have anything left of your precious parts. I had some Aluminum parts tanked with my rig, and was very specific about what they were to do...still I had more clean-up to get them ready for re-installation, paint, etc.

I soaked mine in diesel and used a baby bottle brush and a toilet brush. I also chased all the threads. If time is not an issue, you can port and polish the head/manifold.
