Top up your blinker fluid and pack your left handed knuckle busters, we're going on our annual Churn Creek run this May long weekend! There is usually a Friday departure group and a Saturday departure group. Please post below which group you are planning to join. For newbies: this is a stock-friendly run, with some incredible views, and an amazing experience, you will not regret it! There is an outhouse at south camp, but bring your own TP. You can either stay at camp, or if you are more adventurous, we do day trips that are a bit more exciting, please note that the mud roads can be VERY slick if wet. Drive with caution. There will likely be some snow on the ground, however the long range forecast shows average precip but well above average temperatures for May. I'll be bringing my chainsaw, there's plenty of firewood in the area.

CHURN CREEK RADIO FREQUENCIES

Coastal Cruisers use CB channel 4 for trail talk
Cruiser VHF use 146.460 MHz for trail talk
Other amateur frequencies: 147.0000 MHz repeater VE7LIM
Gang Ranch Highways 143.4450 MHz
In EMERGENCY ONLY, Clinton RCMP use 143.185 , 149.1100,
149.2600, and 149.6800 MHz

DIRECTIONS

Google Maps: clicky

Take the Fraser Canyon Highway 1 up to Cache Creek.
From Cache Creek take Highway 97 north to Clinton.
Fuel up in Clinton and head north on 97 toward Chasm.
Just past the turnoff for Chasm, turn left at Meadow Lake Road.
Follow Meadow Lake Road in the direction of Gang Ranch.
Eventually Meadow Lake Road changes its name to Canoe Creek Rd.
When you go through the Canoe Creek village, keep right and end up
heading north on the High road with the view of the Fraser River on left below.
Do not go to Dog Creek. You may see our campsite across the river down below.
Cross the big suspension bridge and snake up the hill.
Do not go to Gang Ranch; instead go left into Churn Creek protected areas.
There are two campsites, one on the northside of Churn Creek and one on
the south side of Churn Creek. We're usually at the southern one.

So you’d let an islander come along? My BJ74 has no recovery gear, just haven’t had time to
get it all figured out. Would it be okay? Just might be able to make it work with my schedule.
It’s in the shiny newly rebuilt stage. I’d just sleep on a cot in back. What do I need to bring besides my own food and gear?

Absolutely! Not much else to bring, just make sure you can take some decent pictures with your cell phone. VHF if you have it.

I don't go out with a phone, that's why I go out. But I do have a radio with all the forestry freq's.
Try going north of Ft St James without one!

Nice truck! Axe and shovel (a fuller size one, not one of those pissy folding ones) would be an easy addition. I think I saw the Fiskars axes on sale at CT, they are nice axes. Folding pruning saws are very handy as well to quickly get rid of interfering branches and small trees.
Princess Auto has some straps on sale right now too, and a small recovery kit as well.

Thanks, but I’ll bring my ox-head. Don’t worry, I’ve got all that stuff. It’s the truck that’s not fully prepared, not me. ;)

Patti & I will be going up Friday, she booked the day off this year

STOKED to be able to join you all on the Churn Creek run! I am able to go up on the Thursday, too, Scalp, if you don't mind company at the campsite Thurs night. I've checked out the way to get to the campsite on Google Satellite maps and the hand-drawn map of where our campsite will be so I'll just make my way up on my own. I like to take my time, so it's better that people aren't waiting for me! ;)
Two questions:
1) I know you guys have told me a million times which VHF to get...can you tell me one more time? :angelic:
2) How much time should I allow to get from Chasm to the Campsite? It looks to be about 1.5 hours? 2 hours?
See you all at the meeting next week.
Liz

Hi Liz, I would suggest that you look for an in-dash VHF unit of good quality. Avoid the Chinese cheap ones because they don't work for long. I have an ICOM and others recommend the Kenwood Unit. Best to call Burnaby Radio for pro advice at 604 298 5444 or go there at
4257 Hastings . The antenna is very important so get a good one there. It might be cheaper to go to Bellingham but Burnaby Radio is a good local outfit to do business with.
It takes quite a while to get from Chasm to the campsite at Churn, I would say maybe 3 hours if you take your time and enjoy the scenery. Some guys power through there in 2+ hours but you may want to stop for a rest at Meadow lake campsite and also snap pictures coming down the Fraser switchbacks. I would expect to leave Vancouver by 9:00 am and arrive at Churn by 5:00 pm. A lot of the Meadow Lake/Canoe Creek is high speed dirt/gravel but you should air down by the time you get above the Fraser

switchbacks.
As for Churn campsites, I prefer the most southern one and will try for that, but if it is unavailable then the other one is OK as well.
One word of caution: the clay-based canyon roads can be very slippery when wet so take extra care if it's been raining.

Thanks Bill. Beautiful photos and great advice for the radio. I'll head out to Burnaby Radio and get fixed up. Thanks also for the heads-up about the greasy clay. I'll be careful. :)

You might phone Burnaby Radio in advance to make sure they are open. They keep irregular hours.

I've become very community minded as of late, so much so that I'm on the Falkland Stampede committee. So with that I'm sponsoring and volunteering at the Stampede the May Long. I've even volunteered my daughters as well... I do miss Churn, but I also enjoy the comradery of community

I can relate, my kids will be representing in the parade here...take lots of pics for those of us left behind.

I've gotten bogged down in a renovation, won't be able to make it.
