I've been researching this for a long time. The 6.5 is definitely doable and it isn't a bad motor if you use a marine application injection pump. Toyota diesels are neat, and I did have a BJ60, but for the power you get and the PITA to source parts and cost I've decided it isn't for me. BJ parts are a PITA to get here, imagine getting a 1HD-FTE and trying to source parts? I've finally settled on an Isuzu 4bd1t out of an NPR truck. I won't be doing the conversion until the earliest next summer. Hopefully, later than that. One thing to remember about a conversion is very rarely will you ever get your money back out of it. For 5-10k in conversion costs you can buy a lot of gasoline. I'm doing it because my 91 just doesn't have power or economy so I want to try something different. Plus I need a project. A Cummins 6 cylinder is not only too tall but way too heavy. If you do that conversion may as well just take your 80 body and drop it on a Dodge chassis.

I think you would have major issues. California is crazy on smog stuff. I know a guy who put a factory Toyota diesel from a later model 94 I believe in his 91 and he couldn't get it smogged. Because there was no diesel LC imported they don't show a test for diesels. With that said, Idaho is pretty easy and plates are cheap if you want to live on Land Cruiser Lane.

True and I see your point but there has to be a way... How do jeep guy's swap in Chevy 350's, for that matter how does anyone swap a motor of another manufacture into there car/ truck. What's the difference if it's a 350 or a 6.5 diesel. I would think the diesel would be EASER to smog, since diesel burns cleaner and the carbon falls to the ground not into the air...

Are there thoughts on this?

I swapped a 350TBI into my 85 FJ60. It was an 89 motor. I had heard that this would be OK in California but I' d have to follow the 89 smog regulations instead of the 85. In Idaho Ada County is the only county that does smog inspections. I had it tested up there once just for fun. The guy didn't even charge me. I didn't tell him anything about the motor and it came out really clean. He was checking it on 85 LC specs the 2F with a carb and cat. I was running catless with the EFI and I still passed the levels test. I think I could have been nailed on a visual test. I know that there is a really good California smog site that shows all the rules. I've also heard horror stories of smog stations being super strict at one place and not at the next. Good luck if you decide to do it and like I said, "There is always room for more Cruisers to be registered on Land Cruiser Lane in Idaho."

cummind

I just measured hieght of 98 cummins ( bottom of oil pan to top of manifold). It is only about 1" to 1.5" taller than my 1fzfe. Intake and exhaust on the same side. Length is pretty close too.

cummins

I measured in the trucks, but it was pretty close. Not sure it would fit though. Body lift/cowl hood. That would tow my boat nicely.
