Hello, Irecently purchased a 83 fj60 w/183,000 miles. My question is the truck has been running smoothly until the the other day and it only wants to run with the choke open, if anyone has any suggestions as to what to check please let me know. Thanks in advance, chin213

By "choke open" do you mean the knob pulled out?

If so you have the infamous intake manifold leak. Many threads on this subject - try the search feature.

It's possible that your fuel filter may be plugged up too. Just run over to your local auto parts store and pick one up. They're cheap and very simple to replace. You'll know right away if this is the culprit. You should replace it nevertheless not knowing how old it is. Alternatively, follow Tinker's advice and check for a leak.

I remember being high and dry without a fuel filter replacement in my 60 and thanking god for that good ole' choke lever, which ultimately bailed me out and got me home. Just barely.

could also be a vaccuum leak

also check that the inline fuse from your battery is not fried.

that made mine do similar. kept it running, but only by keeping choke open.

Easy to check it's just off your positive post green and white connectors w/ 3 sleeved wires...

HTH!
