So per my other recent thread I've installed a clean, used carb and am progressing through the process of getting the truck running properly.

The choke worked fine with the old carb. After re-attaching the cable to the newer carb I can pull the choke handle out to close the butterfly valve all the way but pushing the knob in does nothing. I have to manually move the linkage to open the butterfly valve.

I have removed the cable, and moved it by hand in and out quite a few times. I also shot PB Blaster inside the cable sheath as best I could and the cable moves even easier now.

With the cable in my hand and fully exposed (maybe 2.5 inches) I can pull the carb knob out and retract the cable. Again, pushing it in does nothing but I can pull the cable out (again 2.5 inches) with ease.

I'm guessing I've done something incorrect? Here are two photos. The first is with the carb knob IN and the second with the carb knob pulled OUT.

Looks to me like it IS moving.

Do the same test again but show pictures of the actual choke plate. Does it actually move or not when pushed in/pulled out?

I moved it by hand. Will take more photos.

Here we go. Choke OUT, Plate CLOSED. Choke IN, Plate CLOSED.

Is it a push pull cable? I can't see how it would have broken...

kinda looks like the clamp piece is bent down, when you push the knob in where does the slack of the cable go?
does it just bend between the clamp and the end nub?

I see no movement of the cable whatsoever when pushing the choke knob in.

the knob goes all the way in to the dash?
the inner cable has to go somewhere

The knob goes all the way in. I agree it does have to go somewhere. I was careful to clamp the brass colored sheath in the clamp.

Even with the cable disconnected from the carb pushing the knob in does not extend the cable. Only pulling the knob out results in movement.

that is odd.
looks like a replacement is in order. cable was still available from Toyota, the knob is not, save your old knob

wondering if the crimp behind the dash is loose, the place where the solid piece meets the sheath behind the dash, as you push the knob in, the "slack" is behind the dash where you can't see it??

Try this & get back to us:

The choke plate is closed…get in the truck & pull the choke knob out. Leave it that way, don’t touch anything.

Then got out to the carb & with a screwdriver, pliers, whatever it takes, manipulate the choke plate to the open position. Then tell us if the knob on the dash moved closed.

Choke knob OUT.

Moving the choke plate towards open does not move the choke cable. The shaft that the choke plate attaches to moves freely and independent of the linkage that the choke cable is attached to.

I walked over to the old carb and these two linkages move together ?

Also - I looked under the dash at the choke mechanism. The entire cable assembly moves when the knob is pushed or pulled. The black outer sheath is not inside the back of the knob assembly - there is chock cable wire exposed for an inch or so. Could this be the culprit?
I took a photo - hard to see but you can tell that the outer sheath is not where it looks to be on a new part.

Is this repairable? At least temporarily?

If were me I’d just buy a new cable & be done with it.

However, you’re going to have to take your current cable off anyway. Do that and see if you can figure out a way to fix it.

But I’d just buy a new one, not that expensive.

Copy that.

that is what I thought last night and posted this morning, the sheath should be attached to the rod part, it should be all 1 piece.
temp fix would be to cut the inner cable and hold the sheath in 1 hand and vise grips on the pull cable to get it to work,
this would get you by until the new part arrives
