Let me preface this with I have done extensive research on this topic, I’m more just reaching out to see what some of y’all have done out of curiosity.

Let me also say this is for the blue 40 I bought from @HENDOG who we all know and love but isn’t exactly gentle on things!!!!

TBI350 SM465 in a FJ40. Trying to find a new clutch. I’m a cheap broke college kid who daily drives a 48 year old vehicle and refuses to pay $300+ for a fancy chevota clutch.

Anyone find any low diaphragm SBC clutches recently? I found a part number, it was no longer good. Did a lot of cross referencing and what I ended up with I do not believe is correct.

@Trollhole was the last Mechanic/shop to work on that issue. As I recall he pulled his hair out traveling all over town in search of the right parts.
I believe he settled on a centerforce product.
Maybe he has the part# listed on an old invoice in a dusty filing cabinet somewhere.
The original clutch plate (which I sent with you) was custom made by a big rig shop on the Southside of Atlanta. Tommy Victor ( not sure of his mud name) knew I liked to go fast so he conjured up the first setup many miles ago.
You could also give Brian a call down @ACC maybe they could help.
If I recall correctly the Chevy clutch needs more leverage/travel then the Toyota clutch slave provides.

And remember children don't buy things from the HENDOG they are not just used they're used up!!!

Anderson do you have a 11" clutch or 12" clutch?

Old ass thread, but the Napa part numbers may still be good.

Did you consider just throwing a 4L60e in there?

I have an 11”, those are different part numbers than what I found so maybe I can have luck with them. The other napa part numbers I had were from 2004 so maybe 2 years is all I need.

And @HENDOG is right the Chevy clutches require more throw than the Toyota hydraulics can provide. Which leads me to wonder why not just install Chevy hydraulics to go with the Chevy trans and engine.

@HENDOG I guess I haven't learned my buying from Hendog lesson yet! You would think after the brown truck I would've stayed far far away lol.

I've had two different Chevy clutches in my FJ62 that have worked perfectly with the Toyota hydraulics. I think the difference though is that I am using the Toyota fork and throwout bearing which has a slightly different motion ratio.
I had a classic SBC clutch/pressure plate on the LS flywheel before and last year I changed it out to a actual LS truck clutch setup since I was in there. I'll see if I can dig up the part number I used for the SBC clutch, the LS clutch is M-pact 04201NSA , should be any 00-07 silverado 3/4 ton clutch kit though.
I JUST tossed my previous clutch/pressure plate, they still looked fine, want me to dig them out of the trash for you? :grinpimp:

I do believe I have the GM fork, no clue was throwout bearing is in there, we’ll see when it comes apart. In my other 40 I have a fancy Downey clutch with a Toyota 4 speed fork and throwout bearing but that’s too pricey for this thing.

I actually found an mpact clutch on rock auto that I think is right but I was unfamiliar with the brand. I have a thing for Luk’s.

I have a gently used clutch, pressure plate and TO bearing I replaced when I lost the 5.3 in my truck. They were purchased from AA and had about 20-25k miles on them. Low profile chevota LUK/Centerforce part.

I replaced them because I was in there.

Free to a good home.

I will happily take those off your hands.

@cruisermatt

Is the pressure plate bolt pattern on the flywheel the same for a SBC/LS? Or do you have to drill the flywheel?

Lets fire up the old memory…
Same bolt pattern but LS uses slightly larger bolts and 6 dowels instead of 2 (iirc). So backwards compatible shouldn't be a issue. I drilled out the SBC pressure plate to bolt it to a LS flywheel and it wasn’t a big deal

Perfect, thanks for the info.

Thanks for helping this youngster out.
He's the perfect owner to keep that 40 in the woods and out of the hands of some Lumbersexual!!!
