Wtf!!

This is getting creepy!!!

The rear calipers are lower torque. Thought it was something like 75 - 80 though. Hmm. I do mine to the manual, rather than rely on my (clearly) faulty memory. I don't know if anyone here has personally torqued theirs correctly and had a problem, so I think that's the issue here - correct torque. I've had mine off and on a dozen times or more since '93.

I see I am in good company. I have been lurking on site for a while after blindly buying a 96 LC on eBay last summer.

I used the handy guides on this site to do my birfs about 800 miles ago. Went great, but I didn't torque the caliper bolts because the job took me all weekend and I wasn't up to that final headache of getting a big torque wrench into the wheel well so I just did my best with a 1/2" ratchet. Big mistake. A bottom caliper bolt fell out and the others were loose.

Maybe put this warning in the birf FAQ.

It happened to me too. Friday night of Cruise Moab. We we were heading up Moab Rim at night. I thought for sure I broke a birf. I even started pulling it apart and then I looked down at the wheel and realized it had a huge gouge in it. Then I realized I was missing the top caliper bolt. Mine were torqued. It is possible I used the wrong spec.

I believe Mark Hawley also lost one at Cruise Moab on his big Orange 80.

wow, glad you're fine!

I got to get under there and check these bolts. I always check the 4 at the very bottom of the knuckle assemblies every time I'm under but should add these caliper bolts to the routine as well.

Stuck lost his knuckle one's at GSMTR

I hope that rig was being held up with more than a hilift. If not that guy was taking a big chance sticking his head underneath the rig.

Two Hi-lifts and tire under front diff.... I am paranoid about using them, that is Josh and his friend.

Changed the pads on my XR650 and some time later was going to work, doing about 80-90kmh the front end took a quick but short dive, thought i had run over something but looking behind i saw nothing. About 1/2 mile later put on front brake to slow for a right hand corner, nothing. Stomped my foot on the rear and got slowed enough to make the corner then tried to figure out what was up. Thought i had blown my front brake line but looked down to see my caliper hanging by the rubber line. Could have easily gone between the fork and the wheel locking it up. Still gives me goose bumps.

wow, i had no idea this was so widespread. i've been lucky so far but i'll retorque them just to be sure.
