none of these have any inherant flaws

Was it an oversight that the "H" was left off of this list?

Many 2H engines start burning oil at about 300k kms.

3B's cracked precups and warped heads - usually ok if you don't remove the head. Head gasket issues as well.

1HZ cracked pre-cups usually go on with out problems, when they do crack and fall then you have some pretty major issues.

Check the aussie boards and you will find out what inherent problems there are with most of these engines.

inherent problems or abuse and neglect?

the problems with the L and the KZ can show up even under the most careful of drving practices ... design flaws.

never had any personal experience with the "h" engine so can't comment...

Surely someone in your area has a mid 70's HJ45 with the "H" diesel. You owe it to yourself to take it for a spin. You have not
"lived" until you have held up miles of traffic with a "H" diesel powered Cruiser. I suggest you drive a RHD with a friend so all the obscene gestures will be directed to that individual and not you. They are great for sightseeing ( points of interest will take several minutes to fade from sight.) ..................1978HJ45

lol, yes abuse and neglect - so what better a proving ground. And I wouldnt always say neglect either - some of those rigs are very well maintained mechanically.

I think the KZJ has been a pretty good engine from all my research, yes there are bad reports - and you will find those on the internet quicker than the good reports (who would make a report of a non-problem).

Anyway, like I said - I'd own one if I needed it - might even get one someday.

cheers.

EDIT, and the 2H's I am referring to are CDN 2H's, pretty much need a rebuild at 25-300k kms.

ah, i have driven a worn out 3B which puked out black and blue pugnent smoke as it struggled to get up a hill or bucking a strong head wind...
i am picturing the same scenerio and although it is REALLY (not) tempting i will have to pass on the experience...

you have done a compression test on your H, right?

since all i hear is bad news then i will recommend staying away from that engine. after all i don't want someone saying "but, but, but WAYNE said it was a good engine"
now if you want to say it is, that is your right but untill you or i have personal experience with one over a long period of time then it would be prudent ...

The engine is actually in great shape ( cranks and runs good with virtually no smoke - only 72,000 original miles). While I am no expert, I suspect the lack of speed is more a result of gearing than lack of power.
Anything over approximately 85 kms and the engine sounds like it is turning a ga-zillion RPM's so I hardly ever push it beyond that. If I feel the need for speed I simply fire up the LJ78.:):)

Just curious, is there a cruiser that has no inherent flaws from birth?? From what I have heard and seen when a problem occures with a cruiser you need to get the cheque book out and talk to the bank. Of course mine is no exception.

I was refering to the entire vehicle drive train ect... not just the power plant and yes inherent problems.

Thanks

"Crushers" must be in the bed with the flu....This subject matter (Prados) usually draws him like a moth to a night light. :):)

Hello,

Any thread involving Prados or LJs should include "Tickling Wayne's Tail" on its title... :D
