I have a handheld LED flashlight that can do 600 lumens, so seeing 400 from a pair of CREEs doesn't surprise me.

I just ordered a set of the backup lights too, after seeing all the pics and positive reviews. Looking forward to being able to see where I'm (un)going...

The CREE lights are 5X1Watts making them 5Watts and they state this 5X1Watts CREE LED as having 400 Lummens.

You do the math.

So something doesn't jive here. A Cree 5X1 is not the same as a Cree Q5, so the Ebay site has some wrong info. I got a set of the LED bulbs the TOnyrific linked to in post #1, and they don't have five LEDs in them, and so are not 5X1's. And the Q5 is one of Cree's XR-E series LEDs, and the Cree spec sheet lists it at 107 lumens (see http://www.cree.com/products/pdf/xlamp7090xr-e.pdf). So I think the 400 lm claim on Ebay is probably fantasy. For comparson, a standard 1156 bulb puts out 300-400 lm (see 26962 - Specifications - GE Commercial Lighting Products), although the output goes down as the bulb ages. The big difference between the incandescent bulb and the Cree LED is that the Cree has a focused beam (+/- 60* according to the specs), while the former sends light out over all 360*, much of which is dispersed and not useful for lighting the dark behind your 80.

Don't take me wrong about the suspected overblown lumen claims, the JLC Lighting bulbs that TOnyrific found are indeed a big subjective improvement over the Toyota stock bulbs - I've seen this first hand. But the quantitative data courtesy of Ebay doesn't seem accurate.

EDIT: Wait, maybe it's like jack stand specs: "3 ton" jack stands are only good for 1.5 tons each because they designed to be used in pairs. Except the vendors don't tell you that on the label. But even 107 lm each bulb x 2 bulbs doesn't equal 400 lm, so the Ebay site still doesn't compute.

I also do not trust all ebay info but...

This will all depend on what chip they are using (which we do not know), the link in page 1 and their web DO NOT state what cree chip they are using.

Now if you get a ver large magnifying glass and a strong light, shine it into that chip in the lights and you will see that its actually more than 1 LED in it. If I'm looking at it right I can count (1 yellow square frame) arround (3 yellow internal Leds).

I which I could take a pic at this magnification but I cant at the moment.

You should be able to see 2 wires going into a black base then 2 wires going into a higher lifted chip, the 2 wires are connected to the an outer yellow square, sourounding the 3 inside leds. The outer square frame could also be a LED since it looks to be the same material, I really dont know.

About the 400 Lumens Claim, I also have my doubts...

OK I found which chip is used via visual inspection.

We have one of these 2:

EZ1000 Gen II LED Specifications

EZ900 Gen II LED Specifications

They are the only chips on the CREE web that look exactly as the chip used in this pair of lights. Look at the bottom of page 1 on each PDF for a diagram of the chip as decribe in my previous post.

Exact specs can be found in the .PDFs attached. (if anyone understands these specs please explain them to me )

I installed my lights over the weekend while camping in Death Valley. We were camped in a canyon with no other lights around but the nights sky, which was pretty dark. To back into my parking spot by my tent was nothing short of impossible after dark as it was very narrow, and I have tinted rear glass and sides. I had already done this twice, so I knew exactly how little light there was in that exact spot from my stock backup lights. Once I put these in, it was like night and day, literally. I could CLEARLY see everything out my back tinted hatch window. It was so bright I decided to just start backing up the dirt road, and it was just like having low beam headlights shining out behind me. Absolutely worth the money in my opinion.

Did anyone see any other good applications on our rigs for other cree chip products other than turn signals? From my past experiences, LEDs don't work well when using with a flasher becasue they don't have a big enough draw to trigger the flasher properly (unless a resistor is used).

I got some LED turnsignals... this resister will stop the high pace blinking?? if so any links to the resistor

Am also thinking about wiring the driver side brake light so that it can be manually switched on (without stepping on brake pedal). Had this feature on my landy discovery years back... for warm fuzzy feeling during poor visibility

The cree spec sheet shows 107 lumens at only 350 milliamps. The XR-E bulb is capable of a maximum of 1000ma which, at that rate, would put out around 230 lumens per bulb. At 750ma the Q5 delivers around 180 lumens. So a total of 400 lumens between the two sounds legit. I just might have to get me a set of these!
