I’ve been doing some general maintenance on a new to me 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser with 285,000 miles. I saw the PCV valve was a cheap item to replace so I purchased an OEM one with a new grommet and installed them today. When I went to start the car my CIL and VSC off and VSC trac lights are now on. I had some trouble removing the rubber grommet because it was so hard and brittle, but I was able to get all the pieces out using some tweezers. I am pretty confident I got all the old grommet out.

I bought a scan tool from AutoZone and am getting the P02340 code which is a camshaft positioning sensor A on bank 1. I am confident I have the PCV valve installed correctly and didn't mess with anything else. I am lost as to what may have caused this. I cant’t imagine the camshaft positioning sensor just happened to go bad at the same time I was replacing the PCV valve. I cant help but think they are related.

Has anyone had an experience like this? Any ideas why I might be getting this code after replacing my PCV valve? Thanks in advance!

Check the wires going to this sensor.

Post a picture and we can see if the wire is routed correctly.

Did you mean P0340.
The wire housing plug, to camshaft sensor, on front of BK 1 time belt cover. Maybe, it came unplugged, as you worked (pulled on cable wire housing) on PCV valve. Check that plug is in all the way (clicks/locks in).
The grayish wire housing block, with three wires is hung by bracket (or should be) on BK1 timing belt cover.

The wire housing comes across engine in harness, across path of PCV valve. It's held on by a little bracket, fixed to timing cover. Often times they ripped off (busted). Then wire plugs just dangle in front of T-belt cover. Increasing changes it comes unplugged.

Thank you! Just checked and sure enough the wires had rubbed the serpentine belt. It looks like the plastic retaining clip on the timing cover is broken so someone used a dan of sealant to keep the plug in place.

Do you think I can just fix the wires instead of replacing the whole sensor? Also any idea if the clip that snaps into the timing cover is available?

Thanks in advance!

You’re the man! That was exactly what happened. The clip is broke and the wires rubbed the belt. Hoping I can fix the wires myself instead of replacing the sensor. Thank you for the part # for that plastic clip too. I’ll be ordering one!

If you can separate the wires and have some wire of the same gauge, I would attempt to splice in the repair to get you going.

Ideally you would want to replace it.

Also check that water hose. It looks like the worm clamp is really squeezing the pipe.

Use good-quality crimp or solder butt connectors with heat shrink, then a larger piece of heat shrink over the entire thing.

Agree with kbfj62 above that your hoses need inspection/replacement as well.

Thanks. I was able to cut out the bad section and solder them back together with some heat shrink. Cleared the code and seems to be good now. I made sure to zip tie the harness to the hardline and as far away from the belt as possible. I have a new sensor and clip ordered as well.

I was wondering about that hose myself. The timing belt and water pump was replaced about 7000 miles ago and I’m assuming the hose and clamps were added then. I dont see any seeping but I dont like the idea of using hose clamps there. I assume from the factory they would have been the constant tension clamps used on all the other hoses?

Yes. The OEM connections were done with constant tension clamps. When you remove the hose, inspect the metal pipes for any pitting. I’m going to assume that the previous owner had a leak there. If the metal is pitted, you could clean the surface well and try to fill in the pits with a thin film of FIPG, let it dry overnight and the connect the new hose and clamps.

Good deal. I believe you are right about the PO having a leak there. I’ll get a new hose/clamps ordered and then take it apart and inspect. I’ll order some FIPG as well. Appreciate the help!

As mentioned above, often it's because of pitting on the pipe; sometimes just because the hose is past its prime. If there's pitting, I like to clean it out with a wire brush, fill with Marine Tex gray, then sand flush. This typically gets it smooth enough to accept a new hose and oem clamp without leaking.

Awesome. I’ll look into Marine Tex gray as well. You guys are great.

I hate to ask but for the life of me I can’t find that hose and the clamps. Any recommendations on what websites I should he looking at? I’ve tried Toyota parts and Cruiser Teq as well as Partsouq and can’t seem to find them.

Partsouq has high quality diagrams. Sometimes it takes some time to find what you're looking for. Enter your VIN and then type in a search term such as "radiator hose" and it will give you results of every part and diagram that includes that term.

Man I gotta get better with that site. Thank you so much! Just ordered them.

I do like Partsouq because you can actually see what you are looking for! Thanks again.
