Everything in my 100s is current on maintenance (recently replaced timing belt for 2nd time at 199k). Engine light came on flashing when accelerating and stops at slow speeds or idle. You can hear a "tick tick tick" from manifold. Is this a misfire? Sparkplug or coil issue? I am in Houston, Texas. We had an unusual winter storm here yesterday and today, but i doubt this is weather related. Any recommendations?

Did you run the codes to see what you are dealing with? As for the "tick-tick-tick" from the the manifold, that could be the infamous cracked manifold.

Aside from the "tick-tick-tick" and CEL, is it running poorly?

I am also waiting for his codes before I try to help

Fingers crossed it may be something easy related to that timing belt job, maybe a wire harness that didn't get secured properly.

@bigredlouisiana did you to the timing belt repair or did a mechanic do it?

Just throwing this out there so it may help rule out some easy things:

Is the ticking from the manifolds happening when the engine is cold only, or also when warm?

If the former, the cold weather snap you're heaving might lead me to think you're getting manifold leak which is normally only noticeable when the engine is cold.

The tick is louder when cold. I had it looked at by a cruiser specialist in Utah in August 2020 (A Rusted Development in Heber City, UT) and they said it was not anything urgent that needed to be fixed however consider addressing a manifold leak in the long run. I believe the tick tick is unrelated to the misfiring.

So no info on the check engine light code?

Tick noise could be a spark plug walking out of the head. Worth a shot to insure all are tight. If loose you will likely see carbon on the coils once removed.
It is indeed a misfire in the 2nd cylinder plus potentially the ignition coil. I took it to Mike Calvert Toyota in Houston, it is in good hands. still waiting on final assessment and recommendation considering the winter storm event (rare for Houston).

I took it to Mike Calvert Toyota dealership here in Houston. They are behind due to the winter weather event. The codes i ran myself indicated 2nd cylinder misfire, but i could not make out anything else. Still learning! I hope to get the update from Toyota by tomorrow. I will share it back here what they recommend and what i end up doing to resolve it.

yes its a misfire in 2nd cylinder. The tick tick is unrelated, i agree believe it is a cracked manifold. I took it to Toyota after checking the codes myself. Looking for an update soon. i will post it back what i end up doing. Thank you!

Did you leave it with them or take it back home? mark the coil pack and swap it with any of the other coil packs and see if the code follows it to the other cylinder. Some people on here even keep a few amazon coil packs in their truck just in case this happens.
left it with them. hoping for an update by morning.

AH OK. Yeah I'm guessing its a simple coil pack swap fix. might cost you a couple bucks but at least she'll be running good and back on the road.

Update from Mike Calvert Toyota. Misfire is ignition coil, plus changing out spark plugs & tune up. Unfortunately, they recommend a few surpising repairs. The shocker to me is they say my front axle assy has to be replaced (cvs). I had Toyota OEM CVs put in Oct 2019!! Have not wheeled it that hard! The Toyota Master Tech told me the Power Steering Resevoir and hoses are leaking which is corrosive and contributed to corroding & damaging the axle boots, which i think is suspect. Anyone heard of this or have an opinion? My estimate including the misfire, power steering system replaced plus axle comes to $4k!! is this right or should i get a second opinion?

Although $4 sounds like a killer deal for all that work, I think you’d be able to re boot the CVs and replace ps hoses (have some made by a local shop) for a pretty fair price. I’m assuming you meant to write $4,000?

replacing spark plugs and coil pack is pretty freakin easy so I’d recommend rolling up your sleeves and just knocking that out in the garage.
