Hey fellas! I've been rolling my FJ80 w the check engine light on for awhile now. She's been hesitating off and on during acceleration w a bit of backfire at times. Just today I tried to start it and all it does is crank and won't turn over. I did the EFI paperclip test and still nothing but the CE light is no longer on and still no start. I'm afraid that I may have shorted the EFI! What else should I check? I'm thinking fuel pump as well. Thanks in advance!

It's a 91 and fuse and relay are good. It's like a hot wire or bypass to be sure the fuse is good.

Uhhh...no.
Back to the beginning.
With the key in the on/run position, is the check engine light illuminated?
No CEL=NO START

the CE light is no longer on

As several folks have suggested, the CE light must be on with the key in the 'on' position with the engine not running or you don't have power to the ignition. No CE light with ignition on is often caused by a faulty fusible link, but there are other possibilities.

Sorry for the late response, I've been in MS working and haven't had much time. I replaced EFI fuses and CE light came back on but it still wouldn't start. Come to find out it's the fuel pump. Thanks fellas for the insight.

A little more info about how you figured that out would sure help the next person in your shoes...
Well....first I checked the EFI relay that is located driver side under the hood that silver and round. It looks like and is next to the horn relay. Once I did that the CE light still did not come on so I checked the fuse inside the cabin located also on the driver's side kick panel that would be closest to your left knee. It turns out that was the one that was burnt and now I know it should have been the first place to check b/c once replaced the CE light came on. Still no start so I cleaned and replace battery terminals and cleaned contact points for battery cables/wires b/c they were caked with oil and grime....still no start. :bang: Once all that was done, I came back here to find out how to replace fuel filter and pump which is what I originally suspected one of them only b/c I know my truck and its issues over the past few months. Both replacement jobs were out of my wheelhouse so I reluctantly had it towed to my guy's shop. Was quoted $400 estimate for job!:censor: Looking into other shops....

So wait: Is it back up and running now, or not yet?

Nope. Fuel pump is shot

Fuel Pump Filter Replacement

Dosen't seem like a bad job. Do some searching before you decide whether you can do it or not. I bet you can.. to be fair I haven't done it yet in my fzj80. But I've done it in my truck and it was not as straight forward as this one looks to be.
