hey guys. So my FJ80 just passed smog last week, but then my CEL came on. Found a hose unplugged from the intake manifold to a valve by the air intake so I said “hey, this should go there” so I plugged it in and reset the ecu. I reset the ecu, and I was good. I guess the ecu has now fully cycled and the CEL came back on. I paper clipped a code 71 but too be honest I don’t know where to start.
From the trouble codes website I see that a code 71 means “Hose leak/blockage, wiring, EGRT sensor, EGR solenoid, ECM” but I don’t really know where to start with that. I’ve searched on here and have found threads about exact issues, but I don’t really know how to isolate my problem.

Jumper wire the egr unplug temp sensor, put a jump wire into harness side , then loop the vacuum lines that feed off and feed egr, this will disable the egr. Or go thru get system and fix the issue

You need a factory service manual in order to own and maintain your vehicle unless you are rich enough to pay for repairs to be done by someone else. The Toyota FSM is detailed, comprehensive, loaded with pictures, charts, diagrams, cartoons and many pages of easy to read sentences.

Now you know where to start.

If homeboy is in Cali he has to fix the EGR, no jumper wire trick for him...

What year is your truck?

It is a 91. That leads up to my next question. Will the redneck fix work on a 91 3fe engine? Or is it specific to 93-94s because the threads I’ve been reading are all about 93-94s.

Yes, this homeboy is in Cali. I didn’t think this would pass the smog test, because from what I know, OBD1 still has the visual inspection.

Shorting the temperature sensor wires will defeat the CEL and let you pass that part of the inspection, and visually the EGR will still be there, but assuming the EGR is not working (Code 71 means exhaust is not flowing through the pipe like it should) you may fail the emissions test.

Error code 71:
EGR gas temp below predetermined level during EGR operation.

Suspects are:
• EGR valve
• EGR hose
• EGR gas temp. sensor circuit
• EGR gas temp. sensor
• VSV for EGR
• VSV circuit for EGR
• ECU

Tests are on page FI-45 of the FSM.
