So I decided a while ago that I would like to try a cheap oil catch can from Ebay that looks like this:

I have a little bit of oil seeping out of the seam where the crossover pipe goes into the intake throat, above the glow screen. Also seem to have a leak coming out of the oil cooler area...side of the engine is messy, but doesn't leave much on the ground and I never lose oil...not much anyway...in between oil changes.

Spent about $70 for the catch can, hoses, clamps, and brass fittings to install the damn thing. Cut one of my fingers on a hose clamp too. Went for a short drive from Surrey into Langley and back...and the oil leaks immediately got much worse. There was no oil on any of the hoses attached to the catch can, and inside was just a tiny bit of sheen.

My guess is that there is too much restriction with this thing...going down from the factory 5/8" to 1/4". The fittings in the can were even smaller in diameter than 1/4"...I actually disassembled it and drilled it out, as you can see in the pic (left-original, right-drilled out to 1/4"). I had thought that this might be enough, but I guess not.

I'd met Mac and he has the same in his HDJ81 that he claims to work well...but I ripped mine out tonight. Good waste of money that was. :banghead: Take it for what it's worth...

Oh yeah...one other thing...if you do decide to try the same POS on your truck, make sure you take it apart and at least blow compressed air through it first for a good long while. You would not believe how much, and the large size of some of them, metal shavings there was inside from the drilling and tapping of the holes.

That would not be good for the turbo...

Howdy! Besides the bore of the hose nipples being way small also, it looks like where the fitting seats inside the mounting block is very restricted also. Way too little flow for what you need. John

It sure looks purdy.

Next time you should use the search button. You'd have found that I bought the exact same catch can (I only paid $15, though) and almost blew the seals out of my engine:

Yeah...I guess I could have, but didn't. I don't always search MUD for everything I do...which could have saved me some money in this case.

On a related topic...FRAM filter for your Toyota? Saw the pic on your other thread and just thought I'd give you a hard time...lol. :D

Interesting how Mac doesn't have any problems using the exact same setup in his 1HD-T though...and he's had his in for a while. His engine was pretty much new though...so I guess everything is tight and he doesn't have very much blowby to cause the pressurization.

Dieseler...I chose the low key grey colour, not the ghetto chrome that's in the picture...:D It's now in the recycle bin.

Hahaha, I was young - I've learned from my mistakes, I swear!

I've got a Racor CCV3500 in the Troopy. Nice little device and it handles plenty of pressure and volume. I had a bad piston with a stuck ring. The crankcase vent tube was puffing like a second exhaust pipe. The Racor unit cleaned the oil mist out of the vent fumes quite nicely. I think I shot a video of it at some point because I was so impressed with how well it worked.

As the old saying.... "Chrome won't get you home" I learned that lesson very young when I "chromed out" a motor I put in a classic vette and spent ALL of my money on a stroker kit heads, and flashy parts... lots of fine work went into it and on the first test drive pretty much the entire car was covered in oil mist as the "chrome" never allowed the gaskets to seat well, oil pan, timing, valve etc were all leaking. I put all the old parts back on after pulling the motor back out and it looked ugly but stopped leaking and ran like a scalded ape!

Thanks for the heads up!
