Charcoal canister replacement 80 Series?

Hi Everyone, I have a '95 LC and I am noticing a few things when I pull up to and away from the pump - bit of a hiss/fumes coming from the gas cap and I am not really able to get a full tank of gas ~80% before the pump cuts off. Does that sound a charcoal filter replacement issue or is there something else that could be the issue? Car has ~300K miles and do not believe it has ever been replaced.

I'm doing a lot of reading since I have a similar issue. The vc-120, AC Delco 215-153 and rebuilding the stock charcoal canister with fresh activated charcoal seem to be the most common options (at least here on mud). All three seem to have fan clubs.

I just ordered an aftermarket 215-153 for under $35 on Amazon, and picked up granulated activated charcoal at the pet store. I'll toss the 215-153 in temporarily to finish fall offroading out, rebuild and install the rebuilt unit, and save the other for a spare.

Duralast vents out the bottom of the can the AC Delco has actual hose connections up top. Both work fine.

My duralast broke after a year or so and imo the AC Delco unit is built better. YMMV.

I'd note the one I linked above is an aftermarket version of the ACDelco part. The real ACDelco is well north of $100.

Also, in case you feel inclined to rebuild yours, I bought enough activated charcoal to rebuild two factory canisters for $21 at the local Petsmart (2nd item 50% off). Probably even cheaper online.

Thanks for the link! I've installed two VC120's and both failed the same way. The bottom pops off and all the charcoal falls out. I wasn't about to purchase a 3rd one at $80.

I figured the aftermarket Delco is a cheap short term solution to get me over a hump. I want to finish the season without gas spewing everywhere. It takes away from the offroading experience.

I actually bought a second used factory canister from a '97 off ebay for less than the cost of a VC120, I'll rebuild both with fresh activated charcoal and drilled out check valves. So at the end of the day, I plan to have two rebuilt factory ones (primary and backup).

FYI, this AC delco part is huge. It doesn't fit well in the stock location. It's really jammed in there. Definitely a compromise solution.

You pull the lower bolt and save for a rainy day; and make a new upper bolt from a peice of 1/4" all-thread. It fits in the location, just requires some arts and crafts with a hacksaw.

I find it hard to imagine that there aren’t any eqivenlant sized Toyota canisters from newer different models that are compatible.

My Toyota 80’s canister lasted nearly 30 years 250,000+ miles.

Hopefully someone with additional knowledge can chime in with a 4Runner, sequoia, Tacoma, tundra, ect that could drop in.

The AC Delco unit fits like a glove. Take off the bottom bracket and use a shorter bolt up top. Snug bug rug.

Agreed. The AC Delco fits fine just like the VC120.

The canister from an FZJ100/105 is a direct fit with some slight hose modifications.
