Ok guys,

I bought an h55f and I need to swap shafts. It has a fine spline long input shaft and I need the short one. I have a short one and thought it would be a simple swap, but now I need some help. I looked at my FSM for my fj60 and it shows how to remove it for a 4 speed so that is what I did. I removed the front bearing cover and then pulled the lower bearing and then it shows using a slide hammer type puller on the input shaft. I did this and the shaft came out about half the distance and bound up on the bottom shaft.

This tranny is still on my transfer case and I was hoping to not have to split the case and pull everything apart from the rear. Any of you h55f guys care to give me the procedure for this?

By the way, I did do an extensive search for this before posting.

Thanks,

Don

Sounds like you have a H55F with a B shaft and for your usage you need a H/F shaft. Make sure your input shaft is for the H55F and not the H42 as they're not interchangeable.

Replacing the input shaft requires a complete teardown of the tranny, but the transfer case will have to come off first. Since the tranny and t-case will be apart just to replace the input shaft you may as well replace the bearings, gaskets, and seals.

It's no small job.

Ok, that's what I was afraid of. No problem with removing the transfer case as I just rebuilt it anyway.

My H55F came with two input shafts. A long fine spline and a short fine spline. They are both 26 teeth gears behind the bearing and the gears are the same diameter. The only difference that I can see between the shafts is the length, and the front oil seal surface on the short shaft is about .130" larger than the long shaft.

Any idea which shaft is for what?

Thanks.

The input shaft for a 2F, 2H and 12H-T motor should be a 10 spline unit, not fine spline by any means. Post up pictures of your input shafts before you go any farther.

Here are a couple of links to the photos of the old and new shafts.

One other dimension that is also different is the long shaft in the tranny has the small pilot bearing size and the short shaft I want to install has the normal gas 2F size pilot bearing tip.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks guys!

The new input shaft is a 1HZ H55 input shaft, as in not the one you need to bolt it up to a 2F. I can't confirm that it is a 1HZ input shaft ( pretty positive it is ) but it is definitely not a 2F input shaft. If I'm right, that 1HZ input is worth a decent amount of money ( sell it to me :) ).

Ok, I should probably describe what I am doing with this tranny. I am converting my fj60 to an Isuzu 4bd1T. I have a clutch plate that is new and is a fine spline and so the only thing that really matters is the length of the input shaft in relation to the bell housing length.

My fj60 is already converted to a chevy 350, so I have the toyota to chevy bell housing and I am using the Isuzu diesel swapper adapter kit.

I know this is a bunch of adapters and such, but all that really matters is that this new shaft is the same length as a 2f input shaft. Anyone have dimensions of a 2f h55f input shaft for overall length?

Thanks guys for your help on this,

Don

I don't know the measurements of the of the H shaft or the HZ shaft but IIRC the HZ shaft is slightly longer than the H shaft. What I remember is that to use a HZ shaft instead of a H shaft that the tranny has to be spaced back from the bellhousing slightly or the tip of the shaft ground down some.

In swapping in the HZ shaft you'll need to swap out the B bearing retainer for a H bearing retainer or shorten the snout of the B bearing retainer otherwise the snout will cover too much of the input shaft.
