Bama, that's one of my routes I put together sometime back. If you stay on the blue trails you should be fine except in a couple areas. One area is occasionally gated and last time we were out there was a tree down.

I would be up to join but the Runner needs the front bearings replaced and I haven't gotten around to it. Also, I manage a 24/7 NOC and will need to be available with the possible inclement weather coming in.

Make sure your prepared for the weather, it's looking cold with possibility of ice in that area.

I can provide more info if need, let me know.

Tim

I was hoping you would chime in! I think I know the place you are talking about that's gated. When you go past Lake Sylvia and it turns into a NF road, it dead ends into a T. There was a gate to the right on road 58 it looks like from the map.

Any thing I should bring for the weather? I just moved up here a couple months ago from AL so I'm not sure how the weather gets up here.

Also how long do you think that whole circle takes to complete?

Our weather is a crap shoot. We are usually on edge of rain or snow, so we get freezing rain and sleet. Pine trees can barely hold themselves up without any extra weight. I would be very careful because of falling limbs if things get icy.

The loop took around 5 hours if I remember correctly. It really took longer because of a aquatic mishap.

I'll add we were not in a hurry and stopped for lunch, etc.

While it isn't as adventurous as Tim's route, a trip to flat side pinnacle would be cool if it snowed. Great views.

Yes, NF 58 is occasionally gated but I also added a few areas that could be gated, tree down, and water possibly high considering the weather this weekend. I added red hazard markers for these areas.

Hard to say on what is needed for the weather this weekend. I'm sure others have thoughts on this and I would like to see hear what they have to say. I always take enough water and food to get me through a hike out of the NF in the event I brake down. They are calling for freezing rain or sleet this weekend so you might play by ear on weather conditions before heading out. Having said this, heading to NF forest during inclement weather is great. I have been out there several times after getting snow and its great.

Let me know if I can provide further info.

Aquatic mishap , if you drove the full route it would take most of the day with a few stops. We cut the route a tad short due to the aquatic mishap.

I'd love to tag along, but I have commitments already. :frown:

If you haven't seen the "Winona Auto Tour" info before, then it might help you see the things that are worthwhile while out there.

Tim's route that you linked to is a good one. FR 58 is usually open during hunting season. It's always been open in December when I've been out there. It's got one good creek crossing and tons of puddles along the route if you like busting them. :) His route doesn't go by the Lake Winona Vista that the auto tour has. It's a good lunch/take a break spot.

We usually take 6-7 hours to make a loop similar in size.

I haven't looked at Tim's map in a while, but the access to Flatside is on FR 94 just south of where it intersects FR805. It is worth the short hike if the skies are fairly clear. I haven't been there in around 10 years so my memory is a little fuzzy.

Call 501-321-5202 and ask the forest service to send you a MVUM for the Jessieville/Winona/Fourche area. It's free and if you do it today, you will probably have it by Friday.

I couldn't recall how much we finished by the time we got back to Winona. Thanks for clarifying.

Just called and requested my very own MVUM.

The HS Forestry Service receptionist sounds hot over the phone..... ;p
For us ignorant folk, WTF is a MVUM?
