I just bought a 92 fj80 ,and its my first one.
I understand lockers in axles.(spool in my $-runner)
However I dont understand the center diff lock :doh:
How does it work and what does it do?
Sorry to be so stupid but I have to learn sometime :rolleyes:

Welcome! The search function on that subject will overload you with info. I basically understand how it works but there are a lot of guys here who will give all the info you need. Try a search under "center diff" or maybe "CDL". :cheers:
 
it's exactly the same principle as the axles
just pretend that the rear and front axles are to the CDL what the wheels are to the axle diff locks
 
The CDL sends power equally to the front and rear axles.
 
There is a diff in the transfercase that allows fulltime four wheel drive on the road, the switch locks it up for the trail.

So when the CDL is locked equal power goes to
both front and rear axles. right ?
 
It sends 50x50 power to the front and rear axles, so doesn't that mean that it makes the tires spin at the same speed?

Actually, no - it spins the front and rear drive shafts at the same speed, but the tires can spin at different speeds. This is because the diffs on the axles are still allowing different wheel speeds. So if one's in the air it will spin faster than the other on the same axle. The only things that spin at the same speed with the center diff locked are the f/r shafts - open axle diffs still allow wheelspin.

Center diff locked results in front and rear driveshafts rotating at the same rpm. This does not guarantee equal power distribution to both axles. The resulting power distribution between the front and rear axles will be relative according to the torque at each axle. Axle torque may vary depending on the relative traction of each tire.

The above remains true with axle diffs locked or unlocked.

I now understand the center diff lock which
I think Im going to try out tommorow.
I tried it out in a parking lot to make sure
it worked but never off road.

Dont sweat it, a center differential is an odd ball, odd to think of when you first tun into it.

another way to look at the CDL is it make a full time T-case act liek a part time T-case
 
CDL locks the front and rear driveshafts so they turn at the samn time.
