So my question is what exactly "locks" when you push the CDL switch/shift into low? I have a basic understanding of the t-case in the 80, but I'm not sure what takes place to lock the thing into a 50/50. What locks the VC?

I think it is the same thing as whats in the differential, basically some spider gears. At least that is what I imagine.

The center diff locks the front and rear driveshafts so there is no slippage. There is a great write-up in the FAQ on diffs, called Diffs for dummies.

the VC is never locked, the 80 series is not All Wheel Drive, the VC is used diffrently as only a rotational dampener not a device to transmit varyalbe rotation as it is in AWD cars.

the FZJ80 has a geared diffrerential in the T-case same as the ones in the axles, this is waht is locked.

Dude,

You hoistin' a few tonight? :D

nope, cannot afford it, it is my friday also, drinking water, :frown:

I just cannot spell and often reverse letters in words, "ing" seams to be particualy dificult, if you see one of my posts with no spellign errors it is because it went through MS word's spell check.

Sorry Raven,

Certainly didn't mean anything by it.

Thanks, I know I read the FAQ, but it has been a while. It does a good job of explaining the basics, but it does not explain exactly what happens when the CDL is pushed. So it does move a fork to lock the differential? What locks the differential?

Also, no worries on the spelling, I have a buddy that is one of the smartest people I have ever met and he can't spell to save his life. It's just one of those things.

What locks the diff is in the front output housing. A fork slides a locking collar to lock the front out put shaft to piece of the differential carrier(almost like a syncro shift mech). This locks the shaft to the housing, not allowing the spiders to turn within the houseing. This is done with a electric motor thus the CDL button. Now with just the shift to low, this mechanically moves the gears inside the center sections, when the gear slider moves, it moves a switch which then tell the center to lock at the center diff comupter. Then the elec motor moves the shift mech and the center get locked. hope that helps. Some good pic in the FSM may also help. later robbie
