I just noticed in my wife's 2000 LX that I can't hear anything engaging like I do when CDL button is pressed.

Yes, was in neutral. When pressing the button, I do hear it engage and can definitely tell it is engaged when turning vehicle. However, the proper lights do not come. I have researched that to be the indicator switch may need cleaning. Although I cannot get a wrench to it to retrieve it. When dropping the transfer case lever, nothing changes.

I found my CDL needing frequent use to get operation correctly. Try turn off & on frequently over next month. You may find lights will start working again.

This happened to me, it was the Transfer Indicator Switch. There is a thread somewhere on here that talks about how to replace it. Another indication is that the VCS OFF light does not come on.

Yes I found that thread but I can't seem to get a wrench to the switch. My concern is that the CDL will engage one way but not the other.

If you support the transfer case from below and remove the cross member it should lower the transfer case enough for you to get a wrench in there. Remember to remove the transfer case shift knob.

This happened to me on my 2000 TLC (previous owner never once engaged the system)

On dirt, I engaged the CDL, and in 4wd low I drove 100ft forward in a straight line, and then straight back on the same path 3 or 4 times.

At the end of the session, indicator lights came on.

I was about to try and clean or replace the transfer indicator switch but thanks to a thread I found here I tried this first- glad I did!

Yes...but shouln't have to do both.

I thought 2000 was the first year that the CDL did not auto-engage when shifting to 4LO?

I was wondering if was even designed to engage in low but haven't seen or heard any discussion. I sure would like to know if that's true.

BAM again !! Now your cookin' with gas. That is good information and yet another reason (other than ATRAC) to have a 2000 or newer...IMO.

Thanks for your efforts
