I get WAY better broadcast and reception on my hard mount, but it can be a bad thing too. When the whole trail ride is no more than 200 yards apart, do you really need longer range? Sure, it can help, but on the channels we use (4 usually) it can pick up a lot of traffic WAY out. I was listening to a lumber yard the last trail ride that was over 8 miles away.

That's what I'm thinking. I can usually see most (or all sometimes) of the other trucks. I only take the truck out a few times a year so it's not like I'll need our often. If I feel a need for it later it will be easy and cheap to do a hard mount. The other issue I have is that mounting space is limited. If I ever put bumpers on the truck I will probably hard mount an antenna then.

I have never had a CB do that well. That is pretty good. When I tuned my Firestick, it only barely made a difference.

I didn't mean to reignite the great debate guys. I just want to be able to communicate. For as little as I will use it, it doesn't need to be anything fancy.

no debate, this is what this thread was started for. Some people get lucky and simply buy their stuff, hook it up and it works. Others dont have such luck and have to work at it a little.

in regards to range, I disagree that 200 yards is sufficient. I've led a lot of large groups around and too many times the guy at the back can't hear the guy at the front and vice versa. It's pretty easy to get 10 trucks spread 500-600 yards apart and break up the group cause someone in the back has an issue.

Well as I said, what he has is def better than what I have now. I'll give it a shot and go from there. When we were getting ready to head back to the parking area at D-Town I was asking if someone could give the wifey a ride to the lodge since I assumed my transfer would fight me going into 2wd. No one could hear me and we were in the open by the road and the trucks were right in front of me. I did manage to get it into 2 without too much trouble though so it wasn't an issue. But obviously the handheld ain't gonna cut it.

So I read thru the whole thread, and I am admittedly late to the party, but with regards to mounts, what about the hatch antenna brackets for an 80? Would they provide sufficient ground plane or would the upper tab on the ARB be better to put it on the hood ground plane. Like Sam mentioned, I am a total novice as my dumb questions probably attest, but I am looking for some advice to get a setup for GSMTR next month that will let me talk to folks.
