This is what I have. I have it stealth mounted (electronics under the center console) with the firestik on the bumper. It is "all in one" in that it is in the handset. Still a true hard mount CB without the box.

Love it, and it works great. Learn how to use an SWR and it will make most CBs perform well with the proper wiring/installation/grounding.

So I'm considering buying an antenna and cable to hook up to my little cheap handheld. That little radio can't really broadcast like it is now. Any suggestions on mounting? I was thinking on one of the bed rails?

Get a mag mount and stick it on your roof.
I have about a 2 foot fire stick mounted on my ARB to one of the upper tabs. It doubles as an FM antenna.

So is it just a magnetic base that you screw a regular CB antenna in to?

Yeah. I have one from my handheld I could give you, but I don't think I will see you before GSMTR.

I won't need it until then anyway.

So what do I need to buy then? A length of coax cable, an antenna, and ???

I have all of it. I will just hand it to you :)

18' coax cable and a 4'-5' decent antennae is in order, wouldn't hurt to get a spring as well. The magnetic ones come with a cable but with all due to respect to HH they suck g-nads. if you're gonna do it do it right the first time.

Cool. I'll take whatever you have. I don't mind giving you some $$ for it. Just let me know how much.

Duly noted.

If you plan on taking the setup from me you won't need what Ted is saying, unless you go hard wired.

Well it has to be better than what I have now. I'll give it a shot.

Well, now this discussion has gone full circle. I think we have already briefly discussed that issue.

I didn't mean to reignite the great debate guys. I just want to be able to communicate. For as little as I will use it, it doesn't need to be anything fancy.

You will likely find a tuned mag mount on your hand held will give you plenty of signal when it comes to trail riding. I usually found I could transmit/receive about 3 miles line of sight with an old Uniden and a mag mount. It was far superior to a firestick with the same radio. Plus, with the mag mount, you can just take it off when not in use.
I am certain if you were going with something more powerful than a handheld or kmart model, you would be disappointed with a mag mount. As it stands, after tuning, my firestick does not do much better than a mag mount did previously on my 40.
