IIRC and unless it's been said before here... The FJ Cruiser is also built by Hino...

FYI- FJ Cruiser is built by Toyota at the Tahara plant, same place the 4runner is made.

You never can be too sure what you read on the internet but according to wikipedia and other sites...

"All FJ Cruisers are built by Hino Motors in Hamura, Japan."

I stand corrected, I've even been on that site a bunch  Was thinking it was made alongside the 4r...

Diesel cars havent caught on because the old MB diesels were smelly and smoky and that put in the typical americans mind this flawed principal: Diesel = Dirty and smelly (if MB cant make a Diesel thats pretty, who can?) (not my opionion its just the standard viewpoint)

Standard viewpoint eh?

GM did far more to undermine the acceptance of diesel-powered automobiles with the 4.3 V6 and 5.7 V8 they designed to run on diesel, then anything MB has ever done. Simply look at the numbers of MB diesels that were sold in this country compared to the numbers of poorly manufactured GM autos that were sold during the same time period.

Further, I would bet MB has more vehicles of that era on the road, not just in the USA, but globally, running diesel still today, than any other automaker of the period.

Google it, and read away....

IF we see a french fry oil burner my bet is it's a Hino.

I can't see Toyota doing anything else.

I'll take it a step further and speculate that it's a HYBRID DIESEL;)

To add to Dan's comment/speculation there was a magazine article several years ago about Toyota producing a HD diesel pickup for the US market. IIRC it spoke about a diesel electric 1 ton type truck that would function similar to real HD mining trucks. I don't recall which rag it was.

I went and looked at Tundras yesterday at a Toyota Truck-a-thon. Impressive truck. Trouble is its a half ton, no manual trans and no diesel. They need to fix those things if they are going compete with Phord, Dodge and Chebby.

Trouble is, a "1/2 ton" truck now has better stats than a "3/4 ton" 10 years ago.

They will introduce a heavy duty model in a couple years, then most will have what they want. You will never be happy however:D

In the meantime, they are the largest automotive producer in the World now. Ford, Dodge, and GM are the ones who are playing catch up. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if either Ford or Dodge is out of business within 10 years...

I wonder who else is going to jump into the full size arena. There was some talk a while ago about resurrecting International Lite line. Sterling is now rebranding the Dodge pickups in class 4 and class 5 configurations. Nissan will, no doubt, be looking at a heavier version of the Titan. One wonders what companies like Mitsubishi, Mazda, and Isuzu have in mind. All of them build smallish trucks and biggish trucks and skip the class 2 and 3.

The plants are still going to there... But probably owned by Toyota or Hyundai with new management and employees with a proper work ethic!!!

We call it here 'le déclin de l'empire américain' ;)

I heard that the diesel-hybrid is the only true viable hybrid for the US market. I think all hybrid cars & trucks will end up being diesel-hybrids in the usa.

Man Id love to have a Dodge 5500 with the 6.7 liter cummins.... Big trucks rule..... You can buy a Ford F450 at the dealership now too. Wish it had a better motor in it though....

Sounds like ford, chevy, dodge, are all going to offer mid/light duty diesels.. May not be huge news, but I had generally heard only rumors, not the companies themselves speaking of their intentions...

The new F150 was designed around a sexier twin turbo version of this Navistar V6. Ford's relationship with Navistar queered around that time and the product disappeared. Ford was about to launch their hydraulic accumulator medium duty truck and it also vanished

Does Navistar build the Rover diesel the article I linked mentioned?

I can understand R&D'ing a few different diesels to see what ya come up with, but it would seem a waste of $$$ and resources to actually produce two competing engines when still trying to get the mid/light duty diesels a initial foothold in the U.S. market...... ?
