Hey guys, this is my second posting, so be gentle. I am rebuilding a spare carburetor and I took apart the carb diaphragm. There seems to be a few ultra tiny holes in this part from being used for 20 years. I looked at SOR for a replacement and it is $45!!! Could I just put some silicone on the holes to seal it up or should I shell out the moolah? Is there some other material that I can use to seal up the diaphragm? (Maybe a Trojan condom could work... :D ) Thanks!

im with these guys get the diaphragm at least. but while your waiting :grinpimp: i would try it and see. then let us know. but my impatience always gets the better of me in situation like these. order the part and then rig it until the right one gets there.

Shell out the moolah... shop around first, dealer might actually be cheaper. Believe me, it'll be a different truck afterwards, you've barely got any secondary right now.

I've got a new carb rebuild kit. The only thing that was in it was the gasket to seal around the diaphragm. There was no new diaphragm in the rebuild kit. Impatience is definitely getting the better of me. I will order a new diaphragm and while I am waiting, I will try some JBWeld or something to hold me over until the new part comes in. I will let you guys know how it works out.

You know, I think I misread your post. For some reason I thought you had holes in the metal housing, not the rubber diaphragm itself. I know that some carb kits come with only a gasket, while some come with an actual diaphragm rubber assembly. Obviously JB-weld will not work on the rubber part. ;)

I bought my carb kit at advance auto for like $33 and it had that diaphragm... weird (I'm assuming that we're talking about the one that actautes the secondaries... if not I guess I'm just an ass)...

I am yet to see a carb kit that includes the secondary diaphram... I know the Hygrade and Keyster ones do not... does someone have a part # for one that does?

It came in this one... I got it from advance autoparts.

GP Sorensen, but what is the part number? (I can't seem to read it from the shipping label)

Sorry I don't know which is the part number but here's the rest of the label... I'm 99% sure it came in here but since you guys act so suprised you have me a little worried that I'm mistaken...

Thanks Jim. I actually tried some silicone (the stuff used in kitchen and tile - flexible and heat resistant) and just dropped it in for the meantime. I am going to order a few from the partsamerica.com website. Thanks for the link! Anyhow, the rebuilt carburetor with my silicone hack is in. It purrs like a kitten when driven, but idling seems to fluctuate and in seconds the engine dies. I am troubleshooting it right now.

Yep, The Gr8doughboy is right. I just picked up a GP Sorensen carb rebuild kit and it included the secondary diapraghm. It is a lot better than the last kit I had, (which I can't remember what it was right now.)

The silicone that I used on the secondary diaphragm got some fuel spilled on it and it fell off, so I can't say that it worked or not. A new secondary diaphragm is probably the best way to go.

By the way, I got my carb problem solved. A rebuilt carb makes a huge difference. Purrs like a kitten now.
