Anyone rip out that carbon filter on the top of the air box cover? I did it on my previously owned 2010 4-runner and it felt a little less restricted. Just wondering if anyone else has done it yet.

No. I drive in the desert a lot and want to keep the dust on that filter and NOT on the inside of my truck.

Is it an emissions thing?

You're kidding, right?

The filter is to keep the cabin air clean. It has absolutely no impact on engine performance. It keeps everything from dust to leaves, twigs and bugs from getting into the air inside the truck.

Only harm to the cabin air distribution components can result from removing the filter.

Ugh, not the thick white removable air filter! There is a real thin "carbon filter" riveted on the inside, on the top portion of the air fitler box, that is not replaceable.

Can you post up some pics mate
I'll snap a shot later on today for ya. Here is the thread from T4R.ORG

Edit: here's the pic. It's the top white hydrocarbon filter plastic riveted it.

I did that mod on the 5.7L Tundra but have not done it on LC 5.7L. Many folks have done it on Tundra as you may find it on tundrasolutions.com, mainly to address the whistling issue during acceleration. On my Tundra, I have also done the throttle body gasket mod for same reason. Whistling during acceleration has gone now. LC200 is all stock as of now and will remain that way as long it is under warranty.

OK, now I understand. Before you edited your original post, it appeared you were asking about the cabin air filter, not the engine air filter housing.

You are asking about this:

And yes, it is an emissions thing. This filter is supposed to prevent fuel vapor/fumes from venting to atmosphere - similar function to the carbon cannister on the fuel tank system.

Data from my air restriction gauge indicate that this filter is not restrictive:

I recommend leaving it in place - nothing to be gained by removing it.

Furthermore, some SMOG techs in SMOG-strict zones will fail you for removing it.

Getting my 200 smogged today first time. Getting plates in ca is a monstrous task. Smh

You got me curious. Here is what I found about smog requirements in CA.

Cars Six Years Old and Newer
Most newer cars will be exempt from smog testing for a certain amount of years. You will be charged an annual smog abatement fee when you register your vehicle, rather than being required to provide smog certification.

Title Transfer and Smog Requirements
When you sell a gas engine vehicle that is 4 years old or fewer model years old, a smog certificate will not be required in order to transfer the title. The buyer will pay a smog transfer fee of $8. If the vehicle sold is more than 4 years old model years old, the seller must provide evidence of a current smog certification except in any of the following situations:

The vehicle transfer occurs between a spouse, sibling, child, parent, grandparent, or grandchild.
The vehicle was registered and biennial smog certification was submitted to the DMV within 90 days before the date the title transfer took place. A vehicle inspection report may be required for proof of certification.

Vehicles Inspected in Other States
Because California has such stringent rules regarding smog emissions, vehicles that passed smog inspections in other states might not meet California's standards. Therefore, if you buy a vehicle from out of state, you should double-check with the DMV to find out whether you need to get your vehicle inspected in California before you will be allowed to register it.

If your registration expires while you are out of state and you require an update of your smog inspection sticker, you must submit your registration fees immediately to avoid late fees. Upon your return to California, you must get your car's emissions checked and submit the proper paperwork to the DMV. You will not receive your new registration or new sticker until the DMV receives the updated inspection report.

Odd. Lady at DMV said I need smog for both my cars '13 and '14 for new plates.

$50 per.
