Hi,

I'm rebuilding the stock 2-barrel on my 73 FJ40 and have a question as to how to remove the check ball retainer and ball under the pump plunger. My Haynes manual says to remove it "if necessary," but I'd like to remove it to ensure everything is clean as the cruiser has sat for 10+ years with fuel in the carb.

My thought it that I can get it out with a long set of needle nose, but it's hard to tell what I'm looking at as the whole is small. I also want to make sure I know how to reinstall it -- again it is hard to see. Does anyone have exerience or advice on removing and reinstalling this component?

thanks,
Brian

Lomg set of needle nose pliers. Grab the center piece and twist while pulling. ALso a good idea to only twist in the direction where it causes the clip to contract. Installed the same way. If you turn it the other way while twisting it will tighten it.

Well, after soaking the carb for several day, I still don't see the steel ball that sits below the pump plunger spring and retainer clip. I can see into the hole pretty good now and I don't see it. I also now know what it looks like as I have a replacement in my carb-rebuild kit. I'll try putting a magnet down the hole tomorrow just to double check, but I don't think there is one in there. I'm thinking the previous owner didn't reinstall it when they rebuilt the carb. I'm curious how it would effect the operation without the ball -- thoughts?

I have another quick question. Is the stopper in the flange (Haynes Manual, Fig 3.1, p48 item 20) located immediate below the rubber washer. Meaning, does the rubber washer literally sit on the stopper. After soaking the carb for several days, it still doesn't come out by tapping on it upside down. If I had the equivalent of a small rubber screw driver I think I could twist it out. Thoughts on how to remove.

Thanks in advance,
Brian

first yes the rubber washer sits on top of the stopper i think your asking about the check valve ? you should have remove the gasket sometimes the rubber washer sticks to the gasket that saying, turn the carb over and the stopper , weight and ball should have fallen out did that happen ? I have taken carb apart where the weight or ball or rubber ring was missing so dont be surprised i have also found where the weight then ball was droped in. anyway, maybe it was already misplaced, now as far as the retainer clip goes and this is just the way i do it and it works for me. pop it out with a small screwdriver clean and replace the ball when you put it back in pinch it closed so it will just slide into the slot its round but has a center part of the circle in the midle after its in place take a small screwdriver and use it to sperad out the spring clip until you get enough pressure it stays in place.

I've had the ball stick in the bottom of the carb. A little carb cleaner and a little compressed air will help get it free. Just make sure you have a rag over the hole cause if the ball comes out you will loose it forever.

Thanks guys. Carb cleaner sprayed directly in the hole was enough to break the steel ball loose. It was stuck in the gunk that was previously fuel.

The only item now that I still can't get out is the stopper, discharge weight and ball in the carb body (Fig 3.5 of the Haynes manual on p49 if you have it). With the rubber washer removed, I think I see the stopper about a half inch down the hole, but again, it is a bit hard to see what I'm looking at. I've tried various methods to try to break it free, but no luck yet. I have it soaking in Kroil oil overnight, but I'm not sure that will do it. Any suggestions on how to get this out? Can you also confirm if the stopper is indeed the object I see about a half inch into the hole? I suppose one option is to use a drill bit to hand twist it out and then simply replace it with a new one as this is bound to trash it.

Thanks again,
Brian

Soak it in carb dip, like Berrymans chem dip overnight. The spray cleaner doesn't cut it for carb rebuilds.
